NHS girls post win over Pella in LHC golf

PELLA — Consistency is a word Newton High girls’ golf head coach Scott Enyart is using a lot right now to describe his team.

It is paying off for the Cardinal girls as they notched another win Tuesday. They improved to 4-0 in dual nine-hole action, beating Little Hawkeye Conference opponent Pella on the Lady Dutch’s home course.

Newton fired a four-man player score of 189 while Pella shot a 197. Winterset, a non-conference team, finished with a 261 on the Pella Country Club golf course.

“It is a longer course than we’ve played this season. Our girls shortened the course with their nice tee shots,” Enyart said of the Cardinals’ play on the day. “We’re going into an 18-hole meet Thursday and looking to build off the success our girls have been having.”

Jessica Reynolds led the Cardinals and the entire field with a 43 as the meet medalist. Newton teammate Cydney Hillyard was the runner-up medalist with a 45.

Abby Joliette shot a 50 and Shelbey Cochran carded a 51 to round out the team scoring. Emily Fitzgerald and Jessie Smith shot 52 and 57, respectively.

“Jessica had a solid night of golf with three pars and a birdie,” Enyart said. “She said she had a 20-foot putt on No. 5 for a par and a 50-foot putt on No. 9 for the birdie, but she missed several three-foot putts along the way.”

Enyart said Hillyard, Jolivette, Fitzgerald and Smith had good consistent play over the course. Hillyard played the course’s two par-5 holes well and Jolivette only had one big number hole on the day, he said.

“Shelbey finished strong tonight. She had a monster drive on No. 9 and two-putted to the hole. She also had a par on No. 4,” Enyart said. “We have several players right at the door of breaking through 50 mark to get into the 40s. As a team, we’re seeing more and more consistent play.”

Newton’s junior varsity finished with a team score of 227. Olivia Maharry posted 52 with one par and Lizzy Coyle recorded a par on her way to a 57. Hannah Scotton and Alyssa Bartels each shot a 59 while Amber Sorenson had a 70.

Newton plays in the Linda Bloom Invitational, an 18-hole tournament, at Marshalltown Thursday. Tee time is 10 a.m. on the American Legion Golf Course.
