Davis leads L-S to another team title

MONROE — Lynnville-Sully senior Shelby Davis scored 30 points by herself and the Lynnville-Sully girls track team captured six golds, four silvers and four bronzes in all as the Hawks captured another team title Monday at the Mustang Classic hosted by Prairie City-Monroe.

Davis won the shot put, discus and high jump and the Hawks also won a pair of relays before cruising to the Class B team title. L-S finished with 160 points, which was 28 clear of runner-up BGM, 41 ahead of North Mahaska and 43 in front of Colfax-Mingo.

Sophomore Dakota Hostetter was a part of three wins for the

Tigerhawks. She won the 800- and 1,500-meter runs and anchored the distance medley to a comfortable win.

Colfax-Mingo scored 117 points thanks to 10 top-three finishes. Sigourney was fifth with 95, while Montezuma (67), Pleasantivlle (28) and Twin Cedars (4) rounded out the small-school field.

“We had tremendous performances tonight,” Colfax-Mingo coach Zach Tomas said. “I could not be more proud of the girls’ efforts at this point in the season.”

Davis started her night with a win in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4 feet, 10 inches. She then collected a win in the discus with a toss of 119-11 and followe that up with a gold medal in the shot put that went 33-9.

The 4x100-meter relay and 4x400 relays each won. The foursome of Kasiah Ehrseman, MaKenzy Rosendaal, Jataya Meyer and Brenna Lanser crossed in the 4x100 in 53.54 seconds and the 4x400 team of Mariah Vos, Cori Rice, Ehresman and Madison Rasmussen finished in 4:26.63.

Marissa Vos claimed the sixth first-place finish for the Hawks. She won the 3,000 in 12 minutes, 23.31 seconds and then finished behind Hostetter in the 1,500 with a time of 5:48.60.

Rasmussen collected individual silver medals in both the 400 and 800 and Elizabeth Van Manen was second to teammate Davis in the discus. Mariah Vos was third in the 100 hurdles and Jelissa Rozendaal was third in the shot put.

The final two bronze medals were collected in the 4x200 and the distance medley. The 4x200 included Ehresman, MaKenzy Rozendaal, Meyer and Lanser and the distance medley team included Camryn Russell, Tierney Needham, Van Manen and Rice.

Hostetter won the 800 in 2:32.56 and crossed first in the 1,500 in 5:40.20. The Tigerhawks doubled up in both distance events.

Ivy Moore was two spots behind Hostetter in the 1,500 and finished second in the 3,000. Kennedit Hostetter was third. The other two individual top-three performances came from Ries Wilson in the high jump and Aranda Woods in the long jump.

The Tigerhawks’ winning distance medley team included Woods, Kaylee Stubbs, Erin Earles and Dakota Hostetter. They crossed in 4:47.88.

The 4x400 team of Wilson, Kennedi Hostetter, Earles and Bailey Pease placed third as did the sprint medley team of Jessica Albright, Stubss, McKinzie Tjaden and Woods.

“Every team we competed against tonight will be at our state qualifier, and I feel like we showed we can be very competitive,” Tomas said. “It seems like every meet we are having several girls set personal-records and someone different seems to step up and do something special.”

Tomas did not have two of his top sprinters for most of the meet. Brianna Cooper was home sick and Tjaden ran in just the one relay.
