Newton Trap Team takes on skeet, sporting clays events

Bryce Romick is breaking out to be Newton Trap Team’s top competitor in 2015. He recorded top scores for skeet and sporting clays in in two of three competitions since Thursday for Newton.

Romick led the Cardinals to sixth at a skeet shoot in Knoxville Thursday hosted by Pella Shooters Club. Romick hit 39 out of 50 targets to place 13th individually in a field of 19 shooters.

Newton’s top squad on the night was Romick, Connor McAdoo and Clay Trotter. They combined to great 96 out of 150 targets. Pella finished first with a 139 out of 150 score.

Newton competed in a skeet and sporting clays competition Sunday in Waukee. The meet was hosted by Des Moines Clay Crushers. Newton shot against teams from Oskaloosa, South Hardin, Cherokee, Cam and Des Moines.

Romick posted Newton’s highest score in sporting clays with another 39 out of 50 score, placing fourth. McAdoo and Dawson Cobler combined with Romick to finish seventh as a squad, breaking 100 targets.

Evan Cook was Newton’s top shooter in the skeet event Sunday. Cook broke 30 out of 50 targets to place 62nd out of 92 shooters. Cook, McAdoo and Romick had a team score of 86.

“Although we aren’t taking any awards in skeet and sporting clays, I’m proud of the scores we are posting,” said Paul Klein, Newton head coach. “Teams like Des Moines, Oskaloosa and Pella have regular access to skeet fields and sporting clays equipment to practice.

“We got in a couple practices on skeet and one on sporting clays. From there, we’re learning and improving on the competition field.”

Newton travels to Marshalltown Monday for a trap shoot. On Friday, the team heads to Big Springs for a skeet and sporting clays event.

Newton hosts a trap shoot Saturday at the Jasper County Gun Club. Newton shoots at 11:40 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
