Coach calls Hawks in at BGM track meet

BROOKLYN — Following just more than an hour of competition, Lynnville-Sully girls’ track head coach Darin Arkema made the call Friday night. Inclement weather did not stop the action at the BGM Girls’ Bear Classic Relays.

“I made the decision after the 4x800 relay to scratch the rest of our events and remove our team from competing. With the wet conditions, cold temperatures, and wind, I felt it was not worth our team being out there, risking injury or illness, when we are at this point in our season,” Arkema said.

Lizzy Van Manen won the discus event with a throw of 96 feet, 1 inch. Shelby Davis placed third in the shot put at 31-9 and Jelissa Rozendaal was sixth at 27-7.25.

Davis claimed second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-6. McKinley Conover was fourth in the event at 4-4. In the long jump, Hailey Scandridge placed third with a leap of 12-11 and Kristine Jaennette was fifth at 10-11.

The Hawks’ 4x800-meter relay team of Kasiah Ehresman, Cori Rice, Haley James and Marissa Vos was second in 11 minutes, 41.26 seconds.

Lynnville-Sully scored 45 points in six events, which was a good start, according to Arkema. BGM won the meet with 162 points and the Hawks landed at No. 5 in the seven-team field.

“We have more meets on the schedule and their will be better days, and I didn’t think given the conditions that we were going to get better or benefit from staying and competing all night. I was proud of the girls who did compete,” Arkema said. “We’ll look forward to better conditions on Monday when we are at PCM.”

Lynnville-Sully goes to Monroe Monday for a meet hosted by Prairie City-Monroe.
