PELLA — Newton High’s girls served as host to Pella Thursday at Pella Christian High’s tennis courts. The Cardinals won two matches, both singles, and lost 9-2 in Little Hawkeye Conference tennis action.
Megan Pressgrove and Kate Wyre won in straight sets in their respective singles matches. Pressgrove defeated Lauren Kriegel of Pella, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Wyre notched a 6-3, 6-3 win over Pella’s Anne Williamson.
In the No. 1 singles match, Lily Roozeboom got past Newton’s McKenna Heisdorffer, 7-5, 7-5. Pella’s Bronwyn Metcalf beat Sierra Griffith, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
Newton’s Marisa Modlin lost 6-2, 6-2 to Anna Jaarsma at No. 4 singles. Madison Humphrey dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Pella’s Emma Johnson in No. 6 singles.
Heisdorffer and Pressgrove came up short in a three-set tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles. The Newton duo won the first set 6-3, then lost 6-4 in the second set. Pella’s Roozeboom and Metcalf won the tiebreaker set, 10-5.
Pella’s Elyse Sadler and Emma Johnson beat Newton’s Griffith and Modlin, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles. Wyre and Humphrey lost 6-2, 6-1 to Pella’s Jaarsma and Williamson at No. 3 doubles.
Elizabeth Myers and Melanie Stice of Newton lost 6-0, 6-1 to Pella’s Meyer and Patience Dykstra, 6-0, 6-1. Pella’s Cecily Johnson and Makenzie Bossard defeated Newton’s Arianna Jamieson and Brenda Becerra.
In junior varsity action:
Singles matches — Newton’s Natalie Camp lost to Ernst, 6-1; Bethany Baumgartner lost to Stelter, 6-2; Jamieson beat Dennill, 6-3; Maddie Gooding-Hunt lost to Rennick, 6-1; and Kinzie Loree lost to Van Zee, 6-3.
Doubles matches — Newton’s Haley Walton and Echo Downs beat Ashworth and Burton, 6-4; Jordyn Soule and Baumgartner lost to Ernst and Stelter, 6-0; Soule and Baumgartner lost to Bartels and Hennings, 6-1; Camp and Loree lost to Dennill and Van Zee, 6-4; Gooding-Hunt and Stacie Sanger lost to Rennick and Van Wyk, 7-5; Ali Bestell and Rylie Bakalar lost to Mendoza and Vroom, 6-4; GiGi Chen and Isabella Leach lost to Cairney and Boetker, 6-3; Morgan Modlin and Hayley Sinclair lost to Sales and Teruel, 6-3.
Newton goes to Norwalk Monday. The NHS girls host their only home match Tuesday against Des Moines North.
