Cardinal boys’ tennis team loses to Pella

PELLA — Seamus Vandemore defeated David Schemm 0-6, 6-4, 10-4 in the No. 6 singles match Thursday to give Newton High’s boys their lone win against host Pella.

“Seamus did a great job bouncing back after his first set. It was great to see him get his first win of the season,” said Nick Hoskins, Newton head coach.

Pella’s Little Dutch swept the doubles matches to win the Little Hawkeye Conference dual, 10-1.

“We were outmatched the entire meet, plain and simple. Since we have such a young team, I’m trying to keep my eyes set on the long-term goal. We will take our hits now and hopefully will come out the other side better off,” Hoskins said.

Newton’s John Trettin dropped a 6-2, 6-0 to Jamison Roozeboom in the No. 1 singles match. Joe Stammeyer and Reid Miller lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively, against Pella’s Tom Pettit and Nathan Chaplin.

At No. 3 singles, Newton’s James Trettin lost 6-0, 6-1 to Sam Dykstra. Pella’s Colin Jones beat Newton’s Jared Griffin, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 4 singles match.

John Trettin and Stammeyer lost to Roozeboom and Pettit, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles. Vandemore and Griffin dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Dykstra and Jones in the No. 2 doubles match.

James Trettin and Miller lost 6-2, 6-2 to Schemm and Chaplin at No. 3 doubles. Jonah Keeton and Michael McKinney also dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Pella’s Chue Vue and Caleb Blom in No. 4 doubles.

Newton’s No. 5 doubles team of Parker Schuster and Nick Geerlings lost 6-0, 6-0 to Daniel Thompson and Nathan Vanderwert.

Newton hosts Norwalk in conference action Monday. Matches behind at 4:15 p.m. at Aurora Heights tennis courts.
