Program aimed at farm safety for kids

Ally Schultes

Coon Rapids

Agriculture is the nation’s most dangerous and pivotal industry. Nearly 700 kids have died on farms in the United States between the years of 1995 and 2000. In 2006 alone, more than 3,500 children were injured on the farm. Don’t get me wrong, the farm is a great place to raise a family, but it can also be a dangerous one.

As a Farm Safety For Just Kid’s outreach coordinator, I travel the state teaching farm safety to youth and their families. Farm Credit Services of America has partnered with Farm Safety For Just Kids to educate youth in the state of Iowa about potential hazards on the farm.

An Iowa farm wife founded Farm Safety For Just Kids more than 25 years ago after her 11-year-old son was killed in gravity flow grain wagon accident. Today the organization has over 120 chapters across the U.S. and Canada as well as nine outreach coordinators like myself.

Thanks to Farm Credit Services of America, I am able to do these demonstrations absolutely free. My only job is to spread the farm safety message in the hopes of keeping kids safe on the farm.

If you would like me to address farm safety with your business, organization, or at an upcoming event, please call me at 1-712-790-4906 or email me at abschultes1@hotmail.com.

Here’s to keeping the next generation of farmers safe!
