NHS golfers handle adverse conditions at Valley Classic

WEST DES MOINES — Working through tough playing conditions — windy, cold and damp — Newton High’s Cardinals put together a sixth-place finish in Monday’s Valley Classic.

“It was not weather conducive to golf. I’m proud how our girls fought through the weather conditions and gave a great effort on the course,” said Scott Enyart, Newton head coach. “Scores for everyone and every teams were higher than expected.

“The best thing about today was now we’ve got our first 18-hole tournament under our belts.”

The high school girls played the Red Nine and White Nine at Willow Creek Golf Course in West Des Moines. The Red is a par 37 and the White is a par 36.

Newton finished sixth in a field of 15 teams. The Cardinals posted a four-player total of 401. Waukee won the tournament with a 360 followed by Atlantic with a 364. Johnston with a 379, Valley with a 374 and Marshalltown with a 400.

Jessica Reynolds turned in the low score for the Cardinals with a 90 on rounds of 49 and 41. She claimed the 10th-place individual medal.

Cydney Hillyard finished with a 94 (48-46) and Abby Jolivette carded a 108 (57-51). Emily Fitzgerald shot a 109 (56-53).

Shelbey Cochran had a 110 (58-52) and Olivia Maharry shot a 127 (66-61).

“It was extremely cold and windy this morning. The conditions didn’t change all day,” Enyart said.

“Jessica had a rough start, but turned things around to finish strong. She birdied No. 7 on Red, which is a par-4 hole, then had four pars and five bogeys on White. Cydney was fairly consistent all day. She had several pars on the day and her putting improved as she moved around the course.”

Enyart said Jolivette played the White nine holes really well and found consistency with her swing during play Monday. Fitzgerald played the par-3 holes on both Red and White well, he said.

“Shelbey had a couple of holes which gave her trouble,” Enyart said. “I was proud of how she handled the adversity on the course. She showed great leadership by her example out there today.”

Newton goes to Iowa City April 27.
