Newton boys lose home LHC tennis dual

Joe Stammeyer was a part of both victories Newton High’s boys notched in Little Hawkeye Conference tennis play at home Tuesday.

Stammeyer defeated Oskaloosa’s Jimmy Brown, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 2 singles. He paired up with John Trettin for the first time this season as the Cardinals’ No. 1 doubles team.

Stammeyer and Trettin won a tiebreaker to defeat Brown and Brandon Denhartog 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. Trettin lost to Denhartog, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 singles match.

“John and Joe had not played together in competition before and adapted great. They started off strong, hit a rough patch, but were able to recover,” said Nick Hoskins, Newton head coach. “Anytime we play a third-set tiebreaker it is usually a toss up because the points happen so fast. They really took advantage of their opponents mistakes to pull out the win.”

Oskaloosa took the conference dual, 9-2. Newton had several players in different roles Tuesday — Parker Schuster played his first singles match of this tennis career and Noah Peterson made his varsity debut in the No. 5 doubles team.

“Joe was on his game tonight. He struggled in the middle of his singles match, but was able to find a way to pull it together, which is exactly what I have been looking for,” Hoskins said. “When a player can self correct his mistakes, you know he is learning from his past experiences.”

Newton’s Jared Griffin dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Tommy Johnston at No. 3 singles. Newton’s Reid Miller and Seamus Vandemore lost 6-2, 6-3 in their No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches, respectively, to Samuel Ginaven and Griffen Wondrelich.

Schuster, who was playing singles because James Trettin was ill, lost the No. 6 singles match, 6-0, 6-0, to Gerrit Vanmannen.

“Parker was a last minute addition to our singles lineup. He is eager to learn, not shying away from the opportunity to jump right in to a situation he hasn’t tried yet,” Hoskins said.

Oskaloosa’s No. 2 doubles team of Ginaven and Wondrelich beat Griffin and Vandemore, 6-0, 6-4. Miller and Schuster lost 6-1, 6-0 to Johnston and Andy Ruiz at No. 3 doubles.

Vanmannen and Cody Tuttle rallied past Newton’s Jonah Keeton and Michael McKinney for a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 win at No. 4 doubles. Newton’s Nick Geerlings and Peterson lot 6-1, 6-2 to Jacob Kime and Dylan Tuttle at No. 5 doubles.

“Jonah and Michael played well tonight. The first two sets were close, and seeing them play a third set was a victory in my eyes,” Hoskins said. “They worked well together. Unfortunately, they made one too many mistakes in the tiebreaker.”

Newton is at home again Monday when Norwalk comes in for a conference dual.
