Man who fled police faces more charges after death

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids city worker has died after a fleeing suspect crashed into a van, and now the driver is facing charges.

The chase happened Friday morning, but the city worker, 35-year-old Stephen Justin Cook, died Saturday at a hospital.

Police spokesman Greg Buelow says a 47-year-old Hiawatha man has been charged with vehicular homicide and more charges may be added. The man sped away when an officer tried to pull him over.

Six blocks later, his pickup truck smashed into the city van.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the man ran from the officer. Earlier in the week, the man had been arrested on a warrant for second-degree theft.
