C-M’s Abell wins medalist honors again

KNOXVILLE — Colfax-Mingo’s Jimmy Abell recovered from an early double bogey to win medalist honors at the Knoxville Invitational on Saturday.

Abell carded six birdies, six pars and five bogeys on the other 17 holes and finished with a 1-over-par 71 on the par-70 Pine Knolls.

Abell bested Grinnell’s Lucas Scherf by one shot.

Both of them double bogeyed the par 3 second hole.

Host Knoxville and Pella ran away from the rest of the field in the team standings. The Panthers shot a 319 and won the team title by one shot. Albia (360) was one stroke better than Grinnell (361) for third and Winterset and Pella Christian both finished with 373 in fifth and sixth. Chariton was seventh with a 392 and Colfax-Mingo’s three golfers were eighth with a 435.

Colfax-Mingo’s Mason Mosher shot an 88 and finished in 16th.

Brady DeJoode turned in a 96 and was 24th.

After starting plus-two over his first two holes, Abell recovered with birdies on No. 3 and No. 4.

Abell also had birdies on No. 10, No. 13 and No. 15 and collected pars on No. 1, No. 5, No. 11, No. 14, No. 17 and No. 18. He ended up with a 1-under-par 34 on the back nine.
