Mustangs win six events, take second at Guthrie Center

GUTHRIE CENTER — A sickness earlier this year put a brief damper on Prairie City-Monroe sophomore Jayci Vos’ chances at qualifying for the Drake Relays in the 400-meter low hurdles.

But once she returned to the track, Vos tried to make up for lost time.

Her final chance was Thursday, but Vos came up short despite posting a season-best time of 1 minute, 7.54 seconds. The cut-off for the Drake Relays was 1:05.38.

That time was, however, one of six wins for the PCM girls’ track team at the Guthrie Center Tigerette Invitational.

The six wins, along with three runner-up finishes and three third-place tallies, helped the Mustangs to a second-place finish in the team standings.

PCM scored 110 points and trailed only Panorama, which had 128. West Central Valley (87), Des Moines Christian (77) and Earlham (66) rounded out the top five in the 14-team field.

“We had another night full of season and personal bests this evening,” PCM coach Bridget Martin said. “We were able to capitalize on the perfect weather conditions as well as the great competition the meet had for us.”

Vos’ 400 hurdles time is currently 14th in the state and third in Class 2A. Aside from winning the 400 hurdles, Vos helped the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams to a gold medal.

The 4x100 included Vos, Emily Hugen, Ashley Van Gorp and Mackenzie Clarke and that foursome crossed in 52.30 seconds, which was fast enough to qualify for next week’s Drake Relays.

It is tied for the seventh best time in 2A.

That same group won the 4x200 in 1:51. That is the fifth best time in 2A.

The other wins for PCM came from Rachel Stafford in the 800, Rachel Peter in the 3,000 and Grace Telfer in the shot put.

Peter won the 3,000 by 18 seconds and her season-best time of 11:19.38 is ranked 10th in 2A. Stafford crossed the line in a personal-best 2:27.86 in the 800 and that time ranks 11th in 2A.

Telfer’s personal-best throw of 37 feet, 6 inches in the shot put is sitting 11th in 2A as well.

Telfer won the event by nearly three feet.

Stafford out-kicked Des Moines Christian’s Ashley Stevens to win the 800 by 0.02 seconds.

Peter and Telfer also grabbed runner-up finishes.

Peter was second in the 1,500 with a season-best time of 5:08.81. She lost to Des Moines Christian’s Sydney Clark by 0.03 seconds. Peter’s time is still currently sixth best in 2A.

Telfer was second in the discus with a personal-best throw of 105-0.

“We like where things are headed, and we continue to keep our focus on one meet at a time with the ultimate goals set on the big meets in May,” Martin said.

The other second-place finish came in the sprint medley relay. Ashley Miller, Hugen, Clarke and Stafford finished in 1:59.45.

The 4x400 and distance medley relays were third, along with Clarke in the 100.

Clarke crossed the line in 13.47 seconds.

The 4x400 team of Vos, Stafford, Tatum Schnug and Van Gorp finished in 4:25.15 and the distance medley’s foursome of Miller, Hugen, Morgan Novak and Amaya Hartson hit the line in 4:51.98.

The Mustangs run at Montezuma at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
