Tuesday's open house addresses special-ed transitons

Heartland AEA event addresses students who will need adult services

The Parent & Educator Connection at Heartland AEA is hosting an event Tuesday at the Newton Public Library to address special-education students and their transitions into adult life.

"Let's Talk Transition" will be an open-house-style evening where parents and teens — served by special education — can visit with providers of adult disability services.  Agencies or providers that will be represented include Goodwill, Capstone, Lutheran Services in Iowa, Optimae, Progress Industries, and Vocational Rehabilitation.

The event is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There is no charge to anyone who attends.

The focus will be on agencies serving Jasper County, although many services can also be accessed in neighboring counties. The intent is to thoroughly inform parents about available services their child can access in the community after exiting high school.
