Koder wins twice, PCM takes third in Pella

PELLA — The chances to qualify for the Drake Relays are running thin.

The Prairie City-Monroe boys’ track and field team had another chance Tuesday and came away with two first-place finishes, one runner-up tally and a quartet of third-place finishes at Pella Christian High School.

That added up to a third-place team finish as the Mustangs finished with 97 points. They trailed Pella and Lynnville-Sully in the standings.

“We competed well and it feels good to be competitive and see the progress,” PCM coach Collin Harrison said. “We are getting a lot of PRs, which is great for this time of year.”

Skyler Koder was a part of both PCM wins. He won the high jump with a best mark of 5 feet, 10 inches. He was the only jumper to make 5-10 so he pushed straight to 6-3 for Drake Relay qualifying purposes but couldn’t get a new personal record.

Koder also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to a gold medal. Ricky Reeve, Austin Sneller and Luke Pendroy and Koder finished in 1 minute, 4.03 seconds for the win.

The lone second-place finish came in the 4x400 relay. Noah Anderson, Tyler Dredge, Brady North and Maverick McAtee crossed in 3:46.85.

Anderson and McAtee were a part of individual bronze medal finishes as well. Anderson, a freshman, took third in the 400 with a personal-best time of 54.73 seconds. McAtee was third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:54.

Koder was third in the 110 high hurdles. He crossed in a personal-best 16.55 and the distance medley relay team finished third in 4:13. That foursome included Anderson, Sheldon Speers, North and Noah Henkenius.

The Mustangs compete at Adel starting at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Harrison said he may try to get Koder into a meet Thursday for one last chance at the Drake Relays.
