Harris, Laube earn golds at Hi Charger Relays

CHARITON — Newton High’s boys lost a track meet a week ago because of inclement weather. The Cardinals were able to get into the Hi Charger Relays hosted by Chariton Tuesday.

The deadline for qualifying for the 2015 Drake Relays is Thursday night. Track teams are squeezing in as many opportunities for athletes to meet the qualifying times or marks before then.

Newton’s Deonne Harris won the Hi Charger Relays’ Large Class 110-meter high hurdles in 14.58 seconds, which is the third-fastest time in the state. Harris captured first in the 400 hurdles in 57.74 seconds.

Christian Laube is making an effort to get to the Drake Relays in the 1,600 meters. He won the event Tuesday in 4 minutes, 58.64 seconds. Dylan Main was ninth in the race in 5:27.73. Laube took fifth in the 800 in 2:15.12 and Mikey Bradley placed ninth in 2:18.87.

Harris combined with Jake Bennett, Jaron Roush and Matthew Karsten to claim second in the 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle race in 1:06.16. Jack Callaghan placed third in the 400 in 54.82 seconds and Clayton Baltisberger took 10th in the 200 in 25.33 seconds.

Newton’s 4x800 relay team of Bradley, De’Andre Roush, Zach Theis and Laube ran fourth in 9:28.28. The 1,600 sprint relay foursome of Carson Cazett, Baltisberger, Bennett and Callaghan was fourth in 4:01.58.

Josh Miravalies, Harrison McCarey, Karsten and Harris combined for fourth place in the 4x100 relay in 47.17 seconds. The 4x200 relay team of Miravalies, Cazett, Baltisberger and Jaron Roush was seventh in 1:44.41, and the 4x400 foursome of Callaghan, Bennett, McCarey and Karsten placed sixth in 3:55.

Jace Lukefahr finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 107 feet, 2 inches. Mason Bowes was eighth at 101-1. Bowes placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 38-7 and Alex Miller took eighth at 38-3.

Newton scored 78 points to place fifth in the eight-team field of the Large Class Division. Albia won the team title with 142.5 points

The Cardinals compete at home Thursday in the Cardinal Invitational. Field events begin at 4:30 p.m. at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
