Reynolds shoots 38 to lead Cardinals to LHC win

GRINNELL — Twenty-seven shots shaved off their team total, Newton High’s Cardinal girls made playing their first and second competition of the season on back-to-back days look promising for the 2015 season.

After shooting a 206 Monday at Urbandale, the Cardinals came back to claim their first team win of the season Tuesday. Newton posted a 179 to win a Little Hawkeye Conference triangular meet against host Grinnell, 189, and Oskaloosa, 247.

“Our girls played a very nice round of golf Tuesday. They all knew what they needed to improve on after Monday’s first meet,” said Scott Enyart, Newton head coach. “Each one showed improvement and they know they can continue to improve their games.”

Newton’s Jessica Reynolds and Grinnell’s Sarah Frischmeyer played in the same group Tuesday. The two LHC golfers finished in a tie at the 2014 Class 4A state golf tournament, each shooting a 180.

“These two young ladies had quite a shoot out Tuesday,” Enyart said. “I wish I had been there to see it.”

Enyart said he was gone because of another commitment, so NHS assistant coach Alison Grier guided the Cardinal golfers in the meet at Grinnell’s Oakland Acres Golf Club.

Reynolds carded a career-best 38 as the meet’s top medalist in the nine-hole event. Frischmeyer shot a 39 as runner-up.

Reynolds had birdies on holes No. 3 and No. 7, both Par-4s. Enyart said chipped in on No. 7, which is the hardest hole on the course. He said he asked each Newton golfer to tell him what part of their game improved.

“Jessica said it was her ball striking. She was driving the ball well,” he said. “Cydney Hillyard said she didn’t rush things today and boomed away on her drives.”

Hillyard finished the day at 46. She made a great recovery from hitting her ball into the water on No. 8 and chipped in to save bogey. Hillyard had a par on No. 6.

Shelbey Cochran carded a 47 for the event. She told her coach her tee shots went much better than on Monday. Enyart said Cochran is right there in breaking through for a really good round of golf. Cochran had a long putt on No. 4 for par.

Emily Fitzgerald scored for the varsity for the first time as she shot a 48. Fitzgerald told Enyart it was improved tee shots and better putting which improved in her game.

Abby Jolivette and Olivia Maharry each put up a 54.

Newton’s junior varsity had a four-player score of 216 in Tuesday’s competition. Jessie Smith led the way with a 51 followed by Amber Sorensen with a 54. Hannah Scotton had a 55 and Alyssa Bartels carded a 56.

Lizzy Coyle shot a 59 and Taylor Dydell had a 64.

Newton’s varsity heads to the West Des Moines Valley Classic Monday at Willow Creek Golf Course.
