Raider girls edge NICL’s best at home

BAXTER — With his eye on Drake Relays qualifying, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls track coach Jerry Meinerts stacked a few of his relays Monday night and that may have hurt the Raiders’ chances in scoring points in a few other events.

But in the end, it didn’t affect the overall outcome as the Raiders won four events, finished second in two and were third in four others on their way to a team title in the annual CMB Raider Invitational.

Bridget Hurley won the 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 1.27 seconds and then anchored the CMB sprint medley relay to a gold medal. Sailor Hinegardner and Toni Spencer went 1-2 in the long jump and Payge Jurgens won the shot put by nearly three feet.

Hurley’s teammates in the sprint medley were Maddy Poage, Spencer and Mackenzie Schmitz and the foursome finished in 1:55.95.

“This was a great team win,” Meinerts said.

“Trying to get some relays into the Drake Relays took away from points that we could have scored, but coming out with a win at your home meet is pretty special.”

It wasn’t easy, but CMB won the meet with 100 points, four more than South Hardin and six more than West Marshall.

The North Iowa Cedar League’s top two teams had 96 and 94 points, respectively, while Heart of Iowa Conference rival North Polk was fourth with 84.5 points and Madrid rounded out the top five with 61.

Saydel was sixth with 54 points, Ballard grabbed seventh with 41, Colo-NESCO had 37.5 in eighth and Colfax-Mingo rounded out the field with 21 points.

The Tigerhawks’ best finish was the silver medal they collected in the 4x200.

That relay included Kennedi Hostetter, Brianna Cooper, Dakota Hostetter and McKinzie Tjaden and they crossed the line in 1:53.87.

Ivy Moore was fourth in the 3,000 with a time of 12:38.64 and the Tigerhawks placed fourth in the 4x800 and fifth in the 4x100.

The 4x800 team consisted of Bailey Pease, Dakota Hostetter, Kennedi Hostetter and Moore and the 4x1000 team included Kennedi Hostetter, Tjaden, Cooper and Dakota Hostetter.

CMB’s Hinegardner won the long jump in 15-3 and Spencer was second at 15-1.5. The 4x100 team of Poage, Spencer, Hurley and Schmitz also took second with a time of 53.29.

Third-place finishes included Spencer in the 100, Brianda Bane in the 400 hurdles and high jump and the shuttle hurdle relay team of Hinegardner, Mary Schabilion, Bane and Sydney Ziesman.

“I really think that one event that really helped out tonight was the long jump,” Meinerts said. “To score 18 points there was huge.

“Bridget Hurley had another great night. I asked a lot from her tonight but she responded by winning the 400 and anchoring the sprint medley with another strong 400. She is a real special athlete and I believe is going to have a phenomenal year.”
