Newton girls take on 4A competition at Ames meet

AMES — Going up against Class 4A competition, the Newton High girls’ track team put in its time for the second straight night at the Ames High school Jim Duea Invitational Tuesday.

The Cardinals finished eighth with 52 points while Waukee racked up 194 points to win the team title. Ames was second with 112 points.

“We could not have asked for a better night of weather and great teams to compete against,” said Rachel Tomas, Newton head coach. “This meet is always very tough for us. It mimics our state qualifying meet, since we were against other 4A schools.

“I was pleased with our efforts and improvements in performances. It is good for us to see how we stack up against other large schools. The girls did well even though we were coming off of a meet the night before.”

Sarah Kalkhoff was a double gold-medal winner for Newton. Kalkhoff won the discus with a throw of 129 feet, 11 inches and took first in the shot put at 37-7. Teammate Haley Revell was sixth in the discus at 99-9 and 10th in the shot put with a toss of 31-1.

Leela Spencer finished fifth in the 200-meter dash in 27.72 seconds with Jordan Banfield in 15th at 29.72. Kenna Winther placed 13th in the 100 meters in 14.09 with Serenity Stier finishing 16th in 14.95 seconds.

Newton’s distance medley relay team was second in 4 minutes, 23.76 seconds.Cardinal relays took fifth place in the 4x100, the 4x100 shuttle hurdle, and the 4x400 in 52.15 seconds, 1:12.66 and 4:15.08, respectively.

Newton’s 4x200 relay was sixth in 1:50.70. The 800 sprint medley relay team placed eight in 2:08.45 and the Newton 4x800 relay was eighth in 11:41.26.

Tessa Keeton was ninth in the 400 in 1:09.95 and Kaelee Knoll placed 13th in 1:13.14. Hailey Coy took ninth in the 800 in 2:34.99 and Megan Van Dalen placed 16th in 2:56.39.

Autumn Hunt was 12th in the 3,000 meters in 12:56.32 and placed 15th in the 1,500 in 5:58.16. Sarah Prendergast ran 16th in the 1,500 in 6:42.51.

Anna Barr and Morgann Eide finished 14th and 15th in the 100 high hurdles in 18.62 and 18.97 seconds, respectively. Barr placed 14th in the 400 hurdles in 1:20.30.

Winther was 13th in the long jump with a leap of 13-9.25 and Prendergast was 15th at 12-4.

In junior varsity events, Liz McVey won the 100 high hurdles in 17.55 seconds with Fran Lucas in fourth at 18.17 and Audrey Lucas in sixth at 18.53. Hannah Boecker placed ninth in 19.10 and Knoll was 17th at 21.53.

Newton’s shuttle hurdle relay placed second in 1:17.37 while the 4x100 relay was fifth in 58.55 seconds. The sprint medley relay team was sixth in 2:17.73. Newton’s 4x200 and 4x400 relays were eighth at 2:13.97 and 4:59.99, respectively.

Ali Bestell finished second in the shot put at 30-4 followed by Miranda Ervin in fifth at 27-8.50, Bailey Wall in ninth at 26-1 and Jaylin Bucklin in 10th at 24-4. Bestell placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 82-6 followed by Ervin in ninth at 72-9, Wall in 11th at 69-6 and Bucklin in 13th at 58-.5.

In the 100 meters, Bethany Risius ran 13th in 16.23 seconds followed by Shannah Ergenbright in 14th at 16.34 and Alyssa Williams in 17th at 17.71. Williams places 17th in the 200 in 36.52 seconds.

Destiny Lautenbach ran 10th in the 800 meters in 3:05.30 and Kayla Botterbrodt was 13th in 3:07. Annie Hurt was 17th in the 1,500 in 6:22.84.

Newton has one more meet this week. Newton’s girls compete in the 2015 Cardinal Relays Thursday at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Their first home meet starts at 4:30 p.m. with field events.
