Hawk track teams have solid showing at PC Invitational

PELLA — Lynnville-Sully’s boys and girls had solid performances on the track and in field events at the 2015 Pella Christian Invitational Tuesday.

The Hawk boys placed second with 114 points behind Pella with 155 points. Prairie City-Monroe finished third with 97 points.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls racked up 90 points for third place. Pella dominated with 228 points followed by Carlisle with 150.5 points.

Canyon Kuhlmann paced the Hawk boys, winning the 3,200-meter run in 11 minutes, 4.03 seconds. Cody Gibbs finishes sixth in the race in 12:01.16, which was a season’s best for him.

Kuhlmann combined with Ross Van Wyk, Corey McCoy and David Bastuck to take the gold in the 1,600-meter distance medley relay. The Hawk foursome ran the race in 4:02.95.

“It was a very successful night for our guys. We started the night with Sage Ehresman breaking his own record in the shot put at 46 feet, 5 inches, setting a new school record,” said Mike Parkinson, Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach.

Ehresman finished third in the shot put. Noah Engle placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 126-4 while Blake Wehrle was seventh at 104-0.

“Throughout the night, we saw times drop and our guys continued to improve,” Parkinson said. “Tonight was full of steps in the right direction. We look to continue to have success in our first ever home meet Thursday.”

Ehresman was third in the 100 meters in 11.79 seconds. Ross Van Wyk placed fourth in the 200 in 24.50 and McCoy took seventh in 25.18. Sage Zylstra placed eighth in the 400 in 1:00.02.

Kuhlmann had a season’s best time of 5:01.86 for fourth in the 1,600 meters. Luke Jones took eighth in the 800 in 2:22.79.

Carson Dunsbergen finished second in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.02 and Ryan Hofer was sixth at 1:10.02. Colten Arment ran fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 18.11 seconds. Hofer, Arment, Engle and Carson Dunsbergen combined for second in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:06.25.

Van Wyk, Engle, Ehresman and McCoy combined for second in the 4x200 relay race in 1:37.46. Noah Zylstra, Engle, Van Wyk and Ehresman opted a third-place finish in the 4x100 relay race in 47.09 seconds.

David Bastuck cleared the high jump bar at 5-6 for fourth. Carson Dunsbergen placed seventh at 5-4.

The 4x400 relay team of Bastuck, Kuhlmann, Sage Zylstra and McCoy was fourth in 3:49.79. The 4x800-meter relay foursome of Elijah Collins, Luke Jones, Cayden Johnson and Karl Recknagel placed third in 10:13.20.

Lizzy Van Manen turned in the top individual performance of the meet for the Lynnville-Sully girls. Van Manen captured second in the discus with a throw of 110-7. She placed sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:18.98.

The Hawk girls had two relay teams finish second. Kasiah Ehresman, Brenna Lanser, Makenzy Rozendall and Madison Rasmusson combined for second in the 4x200 in 1:52. Rasmusson, Ehresman, Cori Rice and Mariah Vos posted a second-place time of 10:45.95 in the 4x800.

That same foursome placed third in the 4x400 relay race in 4:28.66. The 4x100 relay team of Ehresman, Lanser, Mariah Vos and Rasmusson was third in 53.65.

“This meet is a great opportunity for our team to see some different schools than we’ve already competed against or usually see,” said Darin Arkema, Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach. “A number of the schools are 2A and 3A and the competition can be tough, but we need that challenge to help us continue to improve.”

Marissa Vos ran third in the 3,000 meters in 12:41.53 and Haley James was sixth in 14:13.29. Marissa Vos placed fourth int he 1,500 in 5:54.82. Rice took seventh in the 800 in 2:42.14.

Shelby Davis cleared the high jump bar at 4-8 for third place. She took third in the shot put at 34-7 and Jelissa Rozendaal was seventh with a throw of 29-7.50. Hailey Scandridge placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 13-6.75 and Olivia Ritter took eighth at 13-.5.

Ritter finished seventh in the 400-meter dash in 1:15.55 and Kristine Jaenette was eighth in 1:19.33. Scandridge was eighth in the 100 hurdles in 19.90 seconds. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Mariah Vos, Jataya Meyer, Shelby Foster and Scandridge was fourth in 1:18.96.

Lynnville-Sully’s sprint medley relay team of Makenzy Rozendaal, Camryn Russell, Meyer and Alexis Hardenbrook placed fifth in 2:12.23. Skyler Young, Tierney Needham, Marissa Vos and Hardenbrook took sixth in 5:30.75.

“I was very proud of how the girls rose to the challenge and were competitive. We saw a number of season best performances,” Arkema said. “We look forward to the rescheduled home meet Thursday, and the opportunity to compete at our home facility as we try to take momentum from tonight and continue to improve.”

Lynnville-Sully hosts a coed meet Thursday at Sully. Field events begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by running events at 4:45 p.m.
