ALTOONA — Colfax-Mingo’s Jimmy Abel proved right out of the gate that he will be a force to reckon with this season.

Facing a handful of Heart of Iowa Conference teams and a few other golfers from larger schools, Abel was better than everyone Monday at the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational.

The Tigerhawks’ top golfer turned in seven pars, six bogeys and five birdies and finished with a 1-over-par 72 at the par 71 Terrace Hills Golf Course.

Abel was one shot better than Nevada’s Braydon Otto.

Abel was one shot worse on the front nine, but he won the meet with a two-under 34 on the back nine.

Nevada won the team title with a 322, besting runner-up Pella by three strokes.

Prairie City-Monroe was third at 356 and South Hamilton (359) and Colfax-Mingo (360) finalized the first five of the eight-team field.

North Polk was sixth at 383, host Bondurant-Farrar was seventh at 394 and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter shot a 407.

PCM was led by Wade Hill’s 87, while Ryan Hill and Reid Jenkins carded 88 and 89, respectively. Chase Keuning turned the final counting score of 92. Ryan Broderson shot a 94 and Noah Lanphier added a 102.

After Abel’s winning 72, Colfax-Mingo also got an 83 from Brady DeJoode and that was good enough to tie for sixth. Mason Mosher shot a 90 and Jake Jeter had a 115.

CMB was led by Garrett Huske’s 95, while Isaiah Texeria, a student at Colo-NESCO, was next at 100. Caleb Van Zante carded a 104 and Jake Hennick fired a 110. Two other Colo-NESCO students — Brevin Johnston and Tyler Anthony — had a 108 and 115, respectively.

PCM plays at Jester Park at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Colfax-Mingo and CMB both head to Saydel at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Wade Hill and Ryan Hill were incorrectly identified in Monday’s Newton Daily News. Wade Hill, not assistant coach and father Brad Hill, shot an 84 at Bos Landen in Pella on Saturday. Ryan Hill, not Brian Hill, carded a 105.
