Olive Jane Lamb Questers

Olive Jane Lamb Questers met at the home of Mary Bruhn April 9. Vice President Betty Peterson presided over the meeting. Officers for the 2015-16 year are: President Linda Kirchhoff, Vice-President Betty Peterson, Treasurer, Susan Hawk, Secretary Janie Hollander and Historian JoAnn Becker.

Bruhn presented an interesting program on some of the origins of marriage. Indian tribes captured women from other tribes for wives, some cultures had arranged marriages, others bartered with horses and cattle for brides. Bruhn gave some symbolisms of marriage such as pieces of metal were broken apart, shaped into a ring and given to women and men as symbols of eternity, and spooning was spoons carved by men to be worn by a woman to show their engagement.

Wedding dresses showed social status. Some wore their finest dresses as their wedding gown. Some colors used for dresses were black and blue but white dresses and gowns were most fitting for a bride. Bruhn displayed her mother’s wedding dress that her mother had made and worn in 1941. Several members brought items from their weddings to share such as their wedding gown, re-made silk bouquet in place of the actual flowers, a purse and wedding pictures from their weddings, their parents and grandparents.

Refreshments were served by the hostess at the end of the program.
