Hawks’ Van Manen wins discus on school-record throw

EDDYVILLE — Winning three of four field events in the Class B division of Thursday’s Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Girls Invitational track meet put Lynnvile-Sully’s Hawks on a good foundation. They were battling South Iowa Cedar League members, especially North Mahaska, in the meet.

Sophomore Lizzy Van Manen increased her own Lynnville-Sully school record in winning the discus event on a throw of 114 feet, 8.50 inches. Lysandra James, a senior, placed third at 80-5. The Hawks went 1-3 in both the discus and the shot put.

Senior Shelby Davis won the shot put with a toss of 31-11 with teammate Jelissa Rozendaal taking third at 28-10.

Davis cleared the high jump bar at 4-10 to win the event as McKinley Conover was fourth at 4-6. Olivia Ritter took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 11-8.50.

“We had points scored in every event but one. We needed each and every one of them as conference rival North Mahaska finished just six points back,” said Darin Arkema, Lynnville-Sully head coach.

Lynnville-Sully won the EBF Invitational Class B championship with 161 points. North Mahaska was second with 155.

“Lizzy’s throw of 113-11 at the state meet last year was the record, but she bettered that by nine and a half inches. She’s off to a great start this season in that event,” Arkema said.

Arkema said the weather had an impact on every athlete’s performances as it went from mild and calm at the start of the meet, then changing quickly to colder and very windy. He said he talked to his team before the meet about the possible shift in the weather.

“I was very proud of how the girls made sure they were warmed up and ready to compete for their events and give their best efforts,” Arkema said.

On the track, the Hawks won four races, finished second in four and had three third-place finishes.

Cori Rice claimed the gold in the 800-meter in 2 minutes, 57.59 seconds. She was second in the 400 in 1:09.64 and Kristine Jaennette finished sixth in 1:22.56.

Mariah Vos won the 400 hurdles in 1:17.58 and Shelby Foster was fifth in 1:30.45. Vos placed third in the 100 hurdles in 18.52 seconds. Brenna Lanser finished fourth in the 100 meter dash in 13.88 seconds.

Marissa Vos placed second in the 1,500 run in 6:04.41 with Haley James was fourth in 6:35.37. Rebecca Morningstar took fourth in the 3,000 meters in 15:44.40 and Haley Breeden was fifth in the race in 15:51.75.

Van Manen and Rice combined with Kasiah Ehresman and Madison Rasmusson for first place in the 4x400 relay in 4:42.04. Van Manen collected a third gold medal as a member of the Hawks’ 4x880 relay team along with Haley James, Alexis Hardenbrook and Marissa Vos in 12:08.57.

The foursome of Makenzy Rozendaal, Lanser, Ehresman and Rasmusson posted two second-place finishes. They posted times of 55.01 seconds and 1:54.84, respectively in the 4x100 relay  and in the 4x200 relay races.

Lynnville-Sully’s sprint medley relay team of Skyler Young, Tierney Needham, Hardenbrook and Ritter was third in 5:35.16. Mariah Vos, Hailey Scandridge, Foster and Jataya Meyer combined for third in the shuttle hurdle relay race in 1:21.14.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls go to Pella Christian Tuesday. The Lynnville-Sully coed track meet postponed Tuesday has been rescheduled for April 16.
