Maher leads PCM girls to win in golf opener

OSKALOOSA — Breanna Maher tied for medalist honors with a 45 and Taylor Phifer carded a 48 for the Prairie City-Monroe girls golf team on Tuesday night.

Playing on the par-35 Harvest Point Golf Course, the Mustangs finished in first place with a 207. Albia was two strokes back at 209 and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont finished with a 311.

Maher’s personal-best round included two pars. She tied Albia’s Lexi Van Polen, but Van Polen was given the individual title after a card back went in her favor.

Sabrina Reed and Ellie Steenhoek both shot 57 to finalize the Mustangs’ counting scores.

Abby Van Haaften turned in a 66, as well.

“It’s great to start the season with a win,” PCM coach Val Edwards said. “I am really pleased with these scores, for the first meet, and should only get better as the season progresses.”

Sydney De Bruin was second to Van Polen with a 53. Albia also got a 54 from Niki Angan and a 57 from Jade Van Polen.

The Rockets were led by Teri Lane’s 57, and Allie Adams also carded a 64.

The Mustangs return to the links Monday.

PCM travels to Pleasantville and action there begins at 4 p.m.
