Federal funds awarded to Newton airport

Funding in the amount of $218,410 was awarded to construct a 2,500 square foot snow removal equipment building at the Newton Municipal Airport Congressman Dave Loebsack announced Tuesday. The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration grant program.

“Our local airports play a critical role in allowing our communities to grow, as well as fuel additional economic development in the region,” Loebsack said. “I am pleased that Newton Municipal Airport is receiving this competitive grant, which will allow the airport to continue function safely and effectively.”

Director of Public Works Keith Laube said the building will house the newly purchased snow plow for the airport, helping to extend the life of the equipment by protecting it from adverse weather conditions.

“That building will be located northeast of the main terminal hanger building,” Laube said. “We’ve been working on the design of that and it is something that will go out to bid in a month of two.”
