Learning corner launched at the library

Kids spending time at the Newton Public Library will have new resources available to help promote the connections between public media and early literacy and math skills, thanks to a new Library Corner placed at the library.

The library corner will include new PBS Kids DVDs and Martha Speaks Read Aloud books, and three brand new iPad stations with PBS Kids learning Apps for young readers. The iPad stations are available right now, and the books and DVDs will be available in a few weeks.

“We’re pleased to expand these Library Corners to another location in Iowa,” said Terry Rinehart, director of Educational Services at Iowa Public Television. “With this Library Corner, families can spend time together reading books, engaging in hands-on activities, and playing online games that support early reading skills like recognizing letters and sounds, and early math skills such as counting and measurement.”

The IPTV Library Corners are part of Iowa Public Television’s Ready for School initiative which works with Iowa communities to strengthen the math and literacy skill of children ages 2-8. Phyllis Peter, Youth Services Librarian has been coordinating the Ready for School initiative in Newton working with local schools and agencies that work with children ages 2 to 8.
