Lynnville-Sully boys win Belle Plaine Invitational

BELLE PLAINE — Lynnville-Sully’s boys got the job done on and off the track Thursday night in the Belle Plaine Boys’ Invitational track meet.

The Hawks amassed 158 points to capture the team championship. HLV was second with 150 points.

“With our first win of the season, our young team really stepped up and learned how to perform at a high level. We really competed hard tonight and everyone knew what it would take to win the meet,” said Mike Parkinson, Hawk boys’ head coach.

Parkinson said Lynnville-Sully got a big boost from the throwing event competitors.

Sage Ehresman and Blake Wehrle went 1-2 in the discus and shot put events. Ehresman took the gold in the discus with a throw of 117 feet followed by Wehrle with a toss of 116-6. In the shot put, Ehresman won with a throw of 45-3 and Wehrle went 37-8.

Ehresman collected a third individual gold medal on the track, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.91 seconds. Teammate Ross Van Wyk ran second in 12.19 seconds.

Ross Van Wyk placed third in the 200 in 24.75 seconds and Jesse Van Wyk was ninth in 29.50. David Bastuck third in the 400-meter dash in 58.38 seconds and Karly Recknagel placed sixth in 1 minute, 2.31 seconds.

Canyon Kuhlmann was the Hawks’ top distance runner on the night. He posted second-place times in the 1,600 meters — 5:09.72 — and in the 3,200 meters — 10:58.64. Kuhlmann ran third in the 800 meters in 2:18.5 and Recknagel placed ninth in 2:39.63. Cody Gibbs was fifth in both the 1,600 and the 3,200 in 5:48.28 and 12:05,01, respectively.

Colten Arment ran second in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.83 seconds and Ryan Hofer was fifth in 19.85 seconds. Hofer placed fifth in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.41 and Arment placed sixth in 1:12.12.

Lynnville-Sully’s 4x200-meter relay team of Caden Dunsbergen, Carson Dunsbergen, Sage Zylstra and Noah Zylstra posted a gold-medal time of 1:43.46. The 4x400 relay foursome of Bastuck, Sage Zylstra, Recknagel and Arment was third in 4:04.96.

Arment combined with Carson Dunsbergen, Hofer and Caden Dunsbergen to claim second in the 440-meter shuttle hurdle relay race in 1:09. The Hawks’ 1,600 distance medley relay team of Arment, Sage Zylstra, Johnson and Gibbs ran second in 4:16.59.

Cayden Johnson, Drake Ehresman, Elijah Collins and Kemper Lukehart combined for a fourth-place finish in the 4x800 relay race in 10:56.44.

Carson Dunsbergen placed fourth in the high jump and Bastuck was fifth as both Hawks cleared the bar at 5-2. Johnson was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16-5 and Recknagel was seventh at 15-9.

In a non-scoring weight person relay, Trevor Squires, Jesse Van Wyk, Aaron Van De Krol and Isaac Collins won the 4x100 race in 56.76 seconds.

“It was a great team win and we had our young men ready to go. Coach (Jeff) Corbett and I are very pleased with this group’s work ethic and team attitude as we prepare for our first ever home track meet on the new surface,” Parkinson said.

Lynnville-Sully hosts the Lynnville-Sully Invitational, a co-ed track meet, Tuesday at Sully.
