Harris wins 110 high hurdles at SEP Invitational

PLEASANT HILL — Newton High’s Deonne Harris is undefeated in the high hurdles this season. After winning twice during the indoor season at 60 meters, Harris opened his senior outdoor season by winning the 110-meter high hurdles Thursday at the Southeast Polk Boys’ Invitational.

Harris ran away from the field with a winning time of 14.58 seconds. Jaylin James of Des Moines East was second in 15.66 seconds. Harris placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.92 seconds.

Newton’s boys finished sixth as a team with 45 points. Southeast Polk claimed the team title in the field of eight teams with 170 points.

Christian Laube came in sixth in the 3,200-meter run in 11 minutes, 0.5 seconds. In the 1,600, Dylan Main was 10th in 5:26.54 and Zach Theis was 12th in 5:31.97.

Jack Callaghan placed eighth in the 800 in 2:16.95 and Theis took 10th in 2:27.38. Callaghan ran ninth in the 400 meters in 56.25 seconds.

Matthew Karsten placed eighth in the 100-meter dash with Jake Bennett finishing 15th in 12.70. Harrison McCarey took 13th in the 200 in 26.35 seconds.

Jarom Williams made a leap of 19 feet, 4 inches for fifth in the long jump. Jace Lukefahr placed fifth in the discus with a throw of 119-10 and Mason Bowes was sixth at 114-1. Alex Miller finished seventh in the shot put with a toss of 41-4 and Bowes was eighth at 39-11.

Newton’s 1,600-meter distance medley relay team of Bennett, Carson Cazett, Clayton Baitisberger and Laube ran fifth in 4:22.04. Theis and Main combined with De’Andre Roush and Blake Robson to take fifth in the 4x800 relay race in 10:04.10.

The 4x400 relay foursome of Bennett, Cazett, McCarey and Josh Miravalies turned in a seventh-place time of 4:07.88. Miravalies, McCarey, Bennett and Karsten placed eighth in the 4x200 really in 1:42.06.

Newton goes to the South Tama Invitational Tuesday.
