Newton Police Department

• Jessica B. Tompkins 23, of Newton, was arrested on a Jasper County warrant for probation violation after authorities were called to the adult probation office at 9:04 a.m. Monday. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Thomas D. Gearhart, 49, of Newton, is charged with possession of controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication after authorities were called to Woodland Park at 1:52 p.m. Monday. Officers found Gearhart face down on the ground smelling strongly of alcohol. He had difficulty standing and was staggering. Gearhart admitted that he had been drinking since getting off work. Officers confiscated a knife and after searching Gearhart because he continually put his hands in his pocket, found a pot pipe and a jar containing marijuana. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Amy J. Johnson, 27, of Lynnville, is charged with operating while under the influence, possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities pulled her over in the 700 block of North Fourth Avenue West at 1:07 a.m. Saturday. After making contact, officers saw a pipe in between Johnson’s legs and she said there was marijuana in the vehicle. Officers found a small amount in a pill container in the console. Officers also smelled alcohol and she had blood shot eyes and slurred speech. Johnson and she admitted to having a couple of shots and had a BAC of .110. She was cited and released to appear.

• A 16-year-old juvenile is charged with failure to yield upon left turn after authorities were called to South 13th Avenue East at 6:16 p.m. Tuesday. The juvenile was traveling eastbound when her vehicle struck the rear of Eric Wickliff’s vehicle, who was stopped with his turning signal on. Both vehicles had approximately $8,000 in damage. She was cited and released to appear.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Office

• Jeffrey J. Poague, 45, of Columbus, N.C., is charged with public intoxication after authorities were called to the Jasper County Jail at 7 p.m. Monday. Poague arrived to serve a two day mittimus when authorities saw he had bloodshot, watery eyes. He also smelled of alcohol. He admitted that he had been drinking before going to the jail and had a BAC of .147. He remained at the jail.
