Lynnville-Sully girls open season winning Belle Plaine Invitational

BELLE PLAINE — Scoring points in 17 of the 19 events, Lynnville-Sully’s girls rolled to a team championship in the Class A division of Tuesday’s Belle Plaine Girls’ Invitational track meet.

The Hawks claimed six gold medals as they amassed 141.50 points to win the team title. BGM was second in the field of eight teams with 120 points.

“It was an exciting night for the Hawks at the first outdoor meet of the season,” said Darin Arkema, Lynnville-Sully head coach. “It was a true team effort. The girls did a great job of having themselves ready to go for each event, as well as putting to use and executing the things they’ve been working on in practice.”

Marissa Vos won the 3,000-meter run in 13 minutes, 20.94 seconds. She was third in the 1,500 meters in 6:02.40 while teammate Cori Rice placed second in 6.00.40. Rice finished second int he 800 meters in 2:49.55.

Mariah Vos took the gold in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:18.70 with Shelby Foster in fourth at 1:27.19. Brenna Lanser came in second in the 100-meter dash in 12.82 seconds and was fourth in the 200 in 28.57 followed by Makenzy Rozendaal in sixth at 29.88 seconds.

Madison Rasmusson turned in a second-place time of 1:05.24 in the 400 meters. Ramusson combined with Mariah Vos, Haley James and Rice to win the 4x800 relay race in 11:02.49.

Lynnville-Sully’s 4x200-meter relay team of Rozendaal, Lanser, Jataya Meyer and Lizzy Van Manen struck gold in 1:56.23. Rozendaal, Lanser, Mariah Vos and Meyer combined for third in the 4x100 relay race in 55.98 seconds.

There was gold in the field events for the Hawks. Van Manen won the discus with a throw of 112 feet, 2 inches with Lysandra James in sixth at 73-10.

Shelby Davis won the shot put with a toss of 32-10.5 and Jelissa Rozendaal placed fifth at 29-5. Davis finished second in high jump, clearing the bar at 4-6 while McKinley Conover ended up in a tie for sixth at 4-4.

“Scoring in the field events was something I knew we needed to improve on from a year ago, and tonight we had six place winners out of eight competitors, which was a huge boost,” Arkema said. “As good as this first meet was, at the end of the night the girls know there is plenty to continue working on.”

Lynnville-Sully’s 4x400 relay foursome of Van Manen, Haley James, Meyer and Rasmusson was third in 4:49.87. The Hawks’ team of Skyler Young, Tierney Needham, Olivia Ritter and Alexis Hardenbrook was third in the distance medley relay in 5:30.76.

In the shuttle hurdle relay race, Meyer, Hailey Scandridge, Foser and Mariah Vos turned in a fourth-place time of 1:20.86. The sprint medley team of Young, Needham, Amalie Bortne and Hardenbrook was sixth in 2:16.66.

“We have a few practices on some no school days because of our spring/Easter break, and look forward to hosting our first home meet on our new track Tuesday, April 7,” Arkema said.
