Not a lot going on in the local sports world, yet there is

The Pressbox

Weather won out Thursday. Too windy.

Newton High’s girls were scheduled to open their outdoor track season Thursday in a meet at Boone. The meet was rescheduled to April 13.

So it goes for spring sports. The first of the high school spring sports previews for Newton, Lynnville-Sully, Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Prairie City-Monroe are in Friday’s Newton Daily News. Previews will run throughout next week’s Newton Daily News.

With the postponement of the track meet Thursday, spring sports for area schools get underway Monday. CMB boys and girls open their track seasons at Greene County. On Tuesday, PCM’s girls host a track meet while Lynnville-Sully’s girls go to Belle Plaine and the boys are at Pella Christian and Colfax-Mingo’s boys are at Nevada.

So, here we go on the whirlwind tour we like to call spring prep sports season.

Basketball season at the college level is all about the NCAA tournaments. By Monday, the men’s tournament will be down to the Final Four. The women’s Final Four will be determined following Monday night’s games.

Me, I’m counting the days to OPENING DAY! That’s right the 2015 Major League Baseball season gets under way with Opening Night April 5 then Opening Day on April 6.

Let’s go Royals!
