Newton YMCA Penguins swim at state meet

Newton’s YMCA Penguin Swim Team had 17 swimmers qualify for the 2015 Iowa YMCA State Swim Meet on March 7-8 in Marshalltown. Newton had seven top-10 finishes in the meet.

The top individual performance was turned in the Lauryn Garrett in the girls’ 8-and-under division. Garrett places second in the 100-yard individual medley in 1 minute, 30.22 seconds, and was second in the 50-yard breaststroke in 46.23 seconds. She was fourth in the 25-yard breaststroke in 21.95 seconds.

Garrett combined with Alyssa Beerends, Lauren Van Manen and Jadin Brooks to take sixth in the 8-and-under 100 medley relay in 1:26.38. The same foursome placed 13th in the 100 freestyle relay.

Jaden Dydell placed sixth in two events in the boys’ 11-12 division. He was sixth in the 50 breaststroke in 35.89 seconds and sixth n the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.68. Dydell finished ninth in the 50 freestyle race in 28.27 seconds.

Thirteen of the Penguin swimmers qualified for two regional swim meets — the YMCA North Central Regional and the Minnesota Youth Athletic Services Midwest Regional. The North Central Regional was over the weekend and the MYAS regional meet is this weekend. Both meets are held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

Qualified for both meets are Jadin Brooks, Coutney Dawson, Jaden Dydell, Lauryn Garrett, Brandon Miller, Ben Peterson, Sarah Prendergast, Alexis Stout and Erika Van Sickle. Qualified for only to the YMCA regional are MaKenna Brooks, Maggie Garrett and Chloe Kibbee. Going only to the MYAS regional is Alyssa Beerends.

The YMCA Penguin Swim Team is coached by Shaphen Brooks, Hannah Scotton and Rachel Prendergast.
