Hawk relay teams win SICL Indoor titles

GRINNELL — Track is an individual sport and a team sport.

In their only indoor track meet of the 2015 season, Lynnville-Sully’s girls and boys turned in their top performances Thursday in relay races. The Hawk girls are the South Iowa Cedar League indoor 4x400-meter relay champion while the Hawk boys claimed the SICL indoor 1,600-meter distance medley relay title.

Kasiah Ehresman, Marissa Vos, Cori Rice and Madison Rasmusson combined to win the girls’ 4x400 relay race in 4 minutes, 36.97 seconds at Grinnell College’s Bear Athletic Center. Individually, Lynnville-Sully’s girls did not have an event champion, but posted 15 top-10 finishes.

On the track in the 1,600 distance medley relay, Lynnville-Sully’s Ross Van Wyk, Sage Ehresman, Noah Engle and Canyon Kuhlmann posted a winning time of 4:05.73. Second place in the boys’ relay race went to Colfax-Mingo — a soon-to-be SICL member — in 4:18.13.

“We are very pleased with our effort and the way we finished the track meet tonight,” said Mike Parkinson, Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach. “Our team has a lot of youth and potential. Our young men have been working hard every day with some high achieving goals in mind.”

The Hawk boys were just like the girls — no individual champions at the conference indoor meet, but turned in 12 top-10 finishes.

Shelby Davis paced the Lynnville-Sully girls with two second-place finishes. Davis was second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4 feet, 8 inches, and finished in a tie for second in the shot put at 32-2. Rasmusson claimed second in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.11 and Vos was eighth in 1:14.76.

The Hawk girls placed three in the top 10 of the 60-meter dash led by Brenna Lanser in third at 8.79 seconds followed y Makenzy Rozendaal in seventh at 9.01 and Skyler Young in 10th at 9.32. Madison Johnson was 30th in 10.13.

Rice placed third in the 800-meter run in 2:53.06. Shelby Foster tied for 14th in 3:12.45 while Rebecca Morningstar wast 16th in 3:13.90 and Haley Breeden was 18th in 3:15.61.

Vos finished in a tie for fourth in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.90 seconds. Hailey Scandridge was 16th in 11.89 followed by Jataya Meyer in 11.92 and Shelby Foster was 20th in 12.42. Vos placed fifth in the 1,600 run in 6:06.42 with Haley James in ninth at 6:26.37.

Kasiah Ehresman turned in a sixth-place finish in the 200 dash in 29.73 seconds. Amalie Bortne was 20th in 33.84 and Josephine Pederson was 28th in 37.15.

Lynnville-Sully’s team of Makenzy Rozendaal, Lanser, Meyer and Elizabeth Van Manen combined for third place in the 4x200 relay in 1:59.97. Van Manen, Tierney Needham, Alexis Hardenbrook and Haley James ran the 1,600 distance medley relay in 5:23.39 for sixth place.

In the 4x800 relay race, Lynnville-Sully’s Hardenbrook, Olivia Ritter, Kristine Jaennette and Breeden combined for sixth place in 13:15.48. Scandridge, Jelissa Rozendaal, Young and Needham put together a 2:09.01 run for eighth in the 4x200 relay race.

McKinley Conover finished in a four-way tie for fourth in the high jump at 4-4. Jaennette took 10th in the long jump with a distance of 11-2.50 and Ritter was 11th at 11-2.25. Jelissa Rozendaal placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 27-4.50 followed by Lysandra James in 11th at 25-1.50 and Conover in 22nd at 21-4.

Sage Ehresman was strong on and off the track for the Lynnville-Sully boys. He claimed second in the shot put with a throw of 43-6. He placed fifth in the 60-meter dash in 7.54 seconds followed by Ross Van Wyk in eighth at 7.65. They both were on the winning distance medley relay.

“There we’re many great efforts tonight, but our headliners were represented by our older athletes,” Parkinson said. “The 1,600 distance medley relay finished in a strong early-season time. Our efforts paved the way for success in the field events, taking second and sixth in the shot put.”

Colten Arment posted a fourth-place time of 9.77 seconds in the 60-meter dash. Ryan Hofer edged out teammate Corey McCoy for ninth in 10.28 and 10.42, respectively. Jesse Van Wyk took 15th in the race in 11.78 seconds.

Engle took fifth in the 200 dash in 25.79 seconds followed by McCoy in ninth at 26.04. Jesse Van Wyk was 29th in 31.13. In the 60 meters, Aaron Van De Krol was 43rd in 9.84 seconds and Isaac Collins was 45th in 9.94.

Kuhlmann ran fourth in the 1,600 meters in 5:02.02 and Cody Gibbs was 15th in 5:51.21. Luke Jones was 13th in the 400 dash in 1:02.12 and Karl Recknagel was 14th in 1:02.79.

In the 800 meters, Drake Ehresman was 21st in 2:43.16, Elijah Collins was 24th in 2:48.09, Connor Fraker was 26th in 2:49.48 and Kemper Lukehart was 27th in 2:54.93.

The Hawk boys’ 4x400 relay ream of Carson Dunsbergen, Sage Zylstra, Caden Dunsbergen and David Bastuck was fifth in 3:58.27. Carson Dunsbergen and Sage Zylstra combined with Jones and Cayden Johnson for seventh in the 4x800 in 10:14.63.

Arment, Caden Dunsbergen Bastuck and Noah Zylstra turned in an eight-place finish in 1:46.58 in the 4x200 relay. The team of Blake Wehrle, Trevor Squires, Hofer and Recknagel was 15th in 1:52.99.

Wehrle placed sixth in the shot put on a throw of 39-0 followed by Noah Zylstra in 15th at 34-10 and Squires in 25th at 31-5. Ross Van Wyk took eighth in the long jump on a leap of 18-1.25 and Caden Dunsbergen was 10th at 17-2.

I”t was a great night for the Hawks and we now know where we stand in the conference and what we must do to compete for a title,” Parkinson said. “More than that, our guys were able to compete in a great event and gain valuable experience to build our program on.”

Lynnville-Sully’s teams open the outdoor track season on March 31 with the girls going to Belle Plaine and the boys competing at Pella Christian.
