Newton Police Department

• Demosthene S. Smith, 37, of Newton, is charged with assault and trespassing after authorities were called to 1501 N. 11th Ave. E. at 2:19 a.m. Monday. Officers were called about an assault and found Smith had trespassed on the property and was yelling. The victim alleged Smith knocked on her window and then went to the front door. When it was opened Smith came in and allegedly pushed the victim down, leaving red marks on her upper chest. He was taken to Jasper County Jail.

• A 16-year-old juvenile is charged with failure to obey stop or yield sign after authorities were called to the intersection of West Ninth Street South and South Eighth Avenue West at 1 p.m. Monday. Shane Foster was driving west of South Eight Avenue. The juvenile was traveling north on West Ninth Street South and stopped at a stop sign, but continued through the intersection. When going through the intersection the juvenile’s vehicle hit Foster’s vehicle. Foster had approximately $1,500 in damage and the juvenile had $300. He was cited and released to appear.
