Physician Guarin to join Newton Clinic in fall 2015

Family practice physician Esgar Guarin, M.D., FAAFP, has accepted an offer to join Newton Clinic, where 13 doctors, one physician assistant, two nurse practitioners and a midwife offer services in the areas of family medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine and podiatry.

Guarin is currently a staff physician at Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton, Mo. Originally from Bucaramanga in Colombia, he is the oldest of five siblings and the only physician in his family, which is primarily made up of lawyers. He completed his medical residency at Franklin Square Hospital Center in Maryland, followed by an obstetrical fellowship at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island. In 2011, he received his master’s in public health at Brown University, focusing on community health and adolescent pregnancy.

“I am extremely excited and proud that Dr. Guarin has chosen Newton as his home to raise his family and practice medicine,” said Mark Thayer, Newton Clinic administrator. “Dr. Guarin is highly trained in both family medicine, as well as maternal and child health. He will be a great addition to the six providers on our current obstetrical services team.”

“Dr. Guarin will bring a significant skill set to Newton Clinic and Skiff,” said family practice/obstetrics physician Dr. Stephanie Bantell.

“He’ll join Dr. Leighton Frost and Dr. Steve Hill as our third provider trained in cesarean sections, and he is also bilingual, which will be a great resource for Spanish-speaking patients. He’s going to be an excellent fit for our practice and our community.”

“He is very personable, professional, and accomplished,” said Skiff CEO Brett Altman. “He is academically astute and practices evidence-based medicine.

We are very blessed to have him join our local medical community as we expand our service offerings in Jasper in our ongoing mission of providing professionally delivered health-care services which are compassionate, personalized and highly skilled.”

Guarin is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is fluent in both English and Spanish. In addition to maintaining a traditional family medicine practice, he has a special focus on obstetrics, including cesarean sections, as well as pediatrics and wound care.

In his personal time, he enjoys coaching youth soccer and is a fan of the Manchester United soccer team.

He is also strongly devoted to his Christian faith and did missionary work in small communities in his country while still in high school and medical school, and has more recently traveled to Honduras on medical missions. Dr. Guarin’s wife, Lilian Cuberos, has a background in microbiology. Together, they are parents to two young daughters, Gabriela and Manuela.

Guarin is anticipated to start early to mid-autumn of 2015.
