AMES — Newton High’s Grace Coen was in the middle of a junior trio at the head of the field in the 3,000-meter race at Monday’s 22nd Iowa State Girls High School Classic. That’s where she finished.

Coen posted a second-place time of 10 minutes, 29.18 seconds in the Cardinals’ final indoor track meet. McKenzie Yanek, a junior from Pleasant Valley, won the race in 10:16.78 and Waukee junior Rachel Brush was third in 10:58.16.

Coen’s race was the top performance for the Newton girls in the high school meet at Iowa State’s Lied Recreation/Athletic Facility in Ames.

“I was proud of the team’s efforts tonight. We were missing several girls so some girls had to step up in different events,” said Rachel Tomas, Newton girls’ track head coach.

“Grace Coen ran a tremendous race in the 3,000. She has had an outstanding indoor showing.”

In the shortest race of the night, Newton freshmen Serenity Stier and Bethany Risius placed 101st and 111th in the 60-meter dash. Stier ran the race in 9.52 seconds and Risius turned in a 10.31-second timing.

Freshman Liz McVey placed 47th in the 60-meter hurdles in 11.052 seconds. Junior Fan Lucas was 62nd in 11.317 seconds.

Sophomore Megan Van Dalen finished 68th in the 1,500 meters in 6:24.48. Sophomore Kayla Botterbrodt took 85th in the 800-meter run in 3:10.03.

Freshman Haley Pevell placed 43rd in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet, 3.75 inches. Ali Bestell, a freshman, was 51st at 28-1.75. Freshmen Randi Walters and Hannah Boecker finished in a tie for 39th in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-4.

Newton’s 4x800-meter relay team of Keeton, sophomore Michaella Cope, freshman Madison Bleeker and Van Dalen was 26th in 11:47.94.

McVey, freshman Audrey Lucas, junior Alex Hutchinson and senior Hailey Coy finished 33rd in the 800 sprint medley relay in 2:05.32.

Newton had two relay teams competing in the 4x100-meter race. The foursome of Fran Lucas, Audrey Lucas, Hutchinson and Coen was 45th in 56.61 seconds. Senior Brenna Schwenker, sophomore Sydney Hook, Stier and Alyssa Williams combined for 72nd in 1:03.43.

The Cardinals’ 4x400-meter relay team of Coy, Keeton, Bleeker and Walters was 52nd in 4:53.37. Hook, Cope, freshman Shannah Ergenbright and Risius finished 69th in 5:28.13.

Newton boys’ track head coach Tom Bartello told the Daily News Monday the Cardinal boys were not competing in the ISU Classic Tuesday. He said too many athletes were traveling during spring break, it was decided to spend the time practicing.

Newton’s track teams continue to prepare of the 2015 outdoor track season. The Cardinal girls open up the outdoor season March 26 at Boone. The Cardinal boys’ first outdoor meet is April 2 at Southeast Polk in Pleasant Hill.
