Hawk players receive SICL basketball honors

Lynnville-Sully’s basketball teams had banner years together in the South Iowa Cedar League. The Hawk girls captured a conference title with a 19-1 run through the SICL while the Hawk boys finished in a tie for third place at 15-5.

Work by the Lynnville-Sully players did not go unnoticed by SICL coaches. With Belle Plaine’s boys bowing out of the Class 1A state boys’ basketball tournament on Monday, the SICL boys’ all-conference selections were released.

Pairing the boys’ teams up with the 2014-15 SICL girls’ all-conference selections, Lynnville-Sully had seven athletes receiving postseason conference honors.

Lynnville-Sully senior Lysandra James was one of four unanimous selections to the All-South Iowa Cedar League first-team. Joining her on the first team was fellow senior Madison Rasmusson. Sophomore Brenna Lanser and junior Marissa Vos earned honorable mention honors.

Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach Jerry Hulsing was named the SICL coach of the year. Hulsing guided the Hawk girls to a 22-2 season — one win away from a second straight trip to the Class 1A state tournament. The Hawk girls led the conference in scoring with 1,113 points for a 55.7-point per game average.

Receiving All-SICL first-team honors for the Hawk boys was junior Kyle Van Dyke. Senior Ben Trettin and junior Sage Ehresman were given honorable mention honors.

For the Hawk girls, their top four scorers received conference honors.

James, the Hawks’ 5-foot-10 inch post player, was a force inside. She led the team in scoring with 306 points and rebounding with 212, which was ninth best and third best, respectively, in the SICL. She also had 26 assists, 20 steals and eight blocked shots.

James shot 43.5 percent, 100-of-230, from the field and was the top free throw shooter for Lynnville-Sully’s girls at 70 percent, 105-of-150, James earned 1A all-state honors from the Iowa Newspaper Association and the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Association.

Rasmusson, a 5-foot-8 inch guard, led Lynnville-Sully with 71 assists and 57 steals, which was tied for fifth in the conference and seventh in the conference, respectively. She was the Hawks’ best outside shooting threat, hitting 36-of-130 attempts for 28 percent.

Rasmusson was fourth on the team and 17th in the SICL in scoring with 225 points. She pulled down 89 rebounds. She shot 36 percent, 81-of-223, from the field overall and was 27-of-45 front the free-throw line, 60 percent.

Lanser and Vos were tied for second in scoring for Lynnville-Sully as both tossed in 242 points this season.

Lanser, a 5-foot-8 inch guard/forward, claimed 205 rebounds, dished out 53 assists and made 52 steals. She shot 40 percent, 73-of-183, from the field and downed 89-of-136 attempts from the line for 65 percent. Lanser was fourth in the conference in rebounds and 12th in steals.

Vos claimed 182 rebounds for Lynnville-Sully, which was fifth in the conference. The 5-foot-9 inch forward shot 41 percent, 80-of-197, and went 82-of-159 at the free-throw line for 52 percent.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys had their top three scorers receive SICL honors. The Hawks went 14-3 after the winter break, winning eight straight at the end of the season. They lost to fellow SICL Sigourney in the 1A district championship game.

Van Dyke, a 6-foot-5 inch junior post player, gained first-team all-conference honors after leading the Lynnville-Sully boys in scoring, rebounds and in blocked shots. Van Dyke was tied with Tucker Jones of HLV atop the SICL list of blocked shots with 60. That was fourth-best in Class 1A.

Van Dyke scored 300 points and grabbed 216 rebounds this season. He shot 59 percent, 133-of-226, from the field and sank 34-of-51 free throw attempts for 67 percent. He finished with 20 assists and 34 steals.

Van Dyke also earned Class 1A All-Substate 5 honors. There were 19 teams in the substate and Van Dyke was one of eight players named to the elite team.

Trettin, senior guard, dished out a team-high 64 assists and 58 steals, which put him 11th and fifth, respectively, on SICL conference lists. He scored 242 points — 13th best in the conference — and had 70 rebounds.

Trettin shot 34 percent, 13-of-38, from 3-point range and was 85-of-193, 44 percent, overall from the field. He was an 82-percent free throw shooter, hitting 59-of-72 attempts.

Trettin was named to the 2015 Iowa Basketball Coaches Association’s Academic All-State Boys’ Basketball Team. There were more than 100 nominees from IBCA member coaches. The 2015 team has an ACT composite average of 29.8, a 4.0 Grade Point Average and a scoring average of 18.5 points per game. Eighteen of the players on the academic all-state team are No. 1 in their respective school classes.

Ehresman is a junior guard for the Lynnville-Sully boys and was the team’s third-leading scorer with 189 points this season. He was third in rebounding also with 81 rebounds. He had 36 assists and 34 steals.

Ehresman shot 37 percent, 74-of-201, from the field. He connected on 17-of-59 3-point field goal attempts for 29 percent. Ehresman sank 24-of-50 free throw attempts for 48 percent.
