Man’s death unrelated to scuffle with Davenport police

DAVENPORT — Scott County authorities say a medical examiner has ruled a 26-year-old man’s death wasn’t related to a scuffle he had with Davenport police two weeks earlier.

Johnson County medical examiner found Victor Jose Sarabia Gomez of Davenport died of an aneurysm. His family had asked for an autopsy to ensure officers didn’t play a role in his death.

The Davenport police chief had said officers tried on Dec. 6 to pull over Gomez, who had a revoked driver’s license. He eventually parked his vehicle but refused to cooperate in his arrest.

Authorities say he struggled with officers and that at one point he got out of an officer’s hold, back onto his feet and had to be taken back down to the ground.

He died Dec. 24 at a hospital.
