25-year-old inmate serving life sentence dies

IOWA CITY — Authorities say a 25-year-old inmate serving a life sentence for first-degree murder has died in eastern Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Corrections says Lucas Allen Faulkner died early Friday morning at University Hospitals in Iowa City. Autopsy results determined that Faulkner died of natural causes from blocked arteries in his lungs.

State prisons spokesman Fred Scaletta says staff found Faulkner unresponsive late Thursday evening in his assigned cell at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. He says emergency protocols, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, were employed when Faulkner stopped breathing.

Faulkner was transported to by ambulance to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
