Lynnville-Sully boys win, advance to 1A district semifinal

MOULTON — Defensively, Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks made a statement from the opening tip Thursday night in Class 1A District 10 play. The Hawks faced an all-too familiar foe in fellow South Iowa Cedar League’s North Mahaska Warhawks.

The two SICL teams had just played each other Friday in a regular season finale.

“We set the tone in the first quarter by playing great defense,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully head coach, following the Hawks’ 54-35 win at Moulton in a district doubleheader.

The Hawks limited the Warhawks to three points in the first quarter to lead 15-3 at the end of the frame. North Mahaska got a little steam up offensively in the second period, but Lynnville-Sully still led 23-14 at halftime.

“We struggled to score in the second quarter, but got it going again after halftime. We did a much better job rebounding the basketball than we did in our last game,” Harthoorn said.

Lynnville-Sully outscored North Mahaska 19-13 in the third quarter. The Hawks pushed its way into the District 10 semifinals with an 12-8 run in the fourth quarter over the Warhawks.

The Hawks (17-5) take on Moulton-Udell, which beat Seymour 65-63 Thursday night, at Moulton Tuesday. That semifinal is at 8 p.m. after Sigourney plays Twin Cedars in the first game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Sigourney defeated Wayne 85-56 and Twin Cedars edged out Keota, 71-66 in overtime, in a doubleheader at Sigourney Thursday.

Lynnville-Sully was led by Tyler Van Zante with 15 points on five 3-pointers. Kyle Van Dyke had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Ben Trettin sank 7-of-8 from the free-throw line on his way to 10 points. Trettin also had four assists and two steals.

Sage Ehresman finished with six points and two steals for the Hawks. Baker Zegers and Jake Brand had four points apiece and Caleb James had three points.

The Hawks shot 36 percent, 18-of-50, from the field. They hit 10-of-26 free throws. North Mahaska was 14-of-42, 33 percent, from the field and went 2-of-4 at the line.

Milan DeJong scored 15 points for North Mahaska.
