Children invited to Winter Fun Day Monday

No school for Newton schools

The Newton Parks and Ground Department is hosting a Winter Fun Day for some good old fashioned winter fun for kids from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Sunset Park shelter.

It is the second year for the event that is taking place during the planned day off for Newton schools. Park Centre and Jasper County Conservation are also sponsoring the event.

“School’s out for the day so we want to give kids the opportunity to just get outside and do something,” Administrative Superintendent Nathan Unsworth said. “A lot of people are experiencing cabin fever right now so it is a good excuse to get outside and burn some energy off for the day.”

The free event will include sledding, games, snowshoeing and snacks including hot chocolate. Kids are encouraged to bring their own sleds to head down the numerous hills at Sunset Park; sleds will not be provided. The Jasper County Conservation office will provide snow shoes for those who would like to try it.

“We had a lot of people come out (last year). It was a good day for it, there was a lot of snow and it was actually quite warm,” Unsworth said.

No snow or cold temperatures is no problem, Unsworth said, as activities are still planned in case the snow disappears.
