Trial set for mother accused of biting child

A May jury trial is scheduled for a Cedar Rapids woman accused of biting her 5-year-old son on the cheek while outside of a Newton convenience store.

Heather N. Wiley, 31, was charged with child endangerment with bodily injury on June 22, 2014 after a witness called police and said she observed the incident at Casey’s, 1200 W. 18th St. S.

The witness said she saw the boy in the front seat of a vehicle upset and crying. She said she saw the mother bending over toward the child and then the child saying “... why did you bite me?” and began crying. The woman then yelled back at he child and said “why do you scream like that?”

The witness provided a license plate number, description of the mother and child and police were able to locate her and pull her over on Interstate 80.

According to the police report, the child had a visible bite mark on the right side of his face. The child told police his mother did bite him.

Wiley pleaded not guilty to the charge. A May 4 jury trial date is scheduled following a pre-trial conference on April 22.
