Newton man takes plea deal in robbery case

$70, pack of smokes stolen after assault

A Newton man charged with second-degree burglary in an incident in which he allegedly stole $70 and a pack of smokes after holding a corkscrew to a victim’s neck has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Joseph K. Reusswig, 37, pleaded guilty Friday to assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, an aggravated misdemeanor.

Reusswig was charged Aug. 23, 2014 after police were dispatched to the 400 block of West Fourth Street South where he allegedly had the victim alone an upstairs bedroom and held a corkscrew up against the victim’s neck and demanded the victim’s money. He stole $70 and a pack of cigarettes from the victim before fleeing the scene.

The maximum punishment for the aggravated misdemeanor is two years of prison, a fine of $6,250, or both, plus court costs and surcharges.

Reusswig is scheduled to be sentenced on March 11.
