Warriors shoot past Cardinals

NORWALK — Three points were all Newton High’s Cardinals came up with in the first eight minutes of Friday’s Little Hawkeye Conference contest at Norwalk. It’s nothing new for the Cardinals to fall behind early then catch up to their opponents.

There was no catching up to the Warriors. Newton did get a little more offense flowing in the second period, but couldn’t stop Norwalk. The Warriors rang up seven of their 11 3-pointers in the first half, pushing toward a 30-17 halftime lead.

Norwalk continued its scoring while Newton struggled coming out of the break. The Warriors built a 46-24 advantage by the end of the third quarter on their way to a 66-34 win.

Sophomore Connor Gholson was the lone double-figure scorer for the Cardinals. Gholson hit two 3-pointers in the game and scored 10 points. Senior Tyler Wood and freshman Garrett Sturtz each had five points.

It was not the showing the Cardinals wanted to end the LHC schedule on. Newton finished 2-10 in conference play.

The Cardinals (7-12) are on the road in non-conference action Monday against Winterset. They complete the regular season at home Thursday in a non-conference game against Carlisle.

Norwalk had four players reach double-figure scoring. Matthew Guessford hit four 3-pointer for his 12 points. Luke Vaske and Carter Albrecht each netted two 3-pointers as they scored 10 points apiece. Baylee Steele had 10 points.
