NEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks took care of business on the road Friday night. With the 53-48 win over host North Mahaska, the Hawk boys solidified third place in the final South Iowa Cedar League standings.

The Hawks finished SICL play at 15-5 and are 16-5 overall.

Prairie City-Monroe boys 66, Greene County boys 49

MONROE — The Mustang boys got a career-high 25 points from sophomore Luke Greiner, outscored the Rams 35-21 in the second half and earned a share of the Heart of Iowa Conference title with another home win.

Logan Gilman also scored 14 points for the Mustangs, who finished 16-2 in conference play. Ricky Reeve and Trey Lindsay each scored eight points as well.

"It feels really good," PCM coach Fred Lorensen said of the co-conference championship. "We felt like we let one get away from us last year, so it was nice to bounce back.
"Things didn't start out well for us, but the kids did a nice job of not giving up on themselves."

The Mustangs (17-4, 16-2) shared the HOIC championship with Gilbert, which also went 16-2. Both Tiger losses came to PCM. Gilbert took care of things on its end Friday with a road win over Collins-Maxwell/Baxter.

Greene County stayed close in the first half because it made five 3-pointers. That number shrank to just one in the second half as the Mustangs rode another solid defensive effort to victory.

"We cleaned up some things defensively and did a nice job of containing (Trey Tucker)," Lorensen said.

Tucker came into the game averaging 24 points per game but was held to just five Friday night.

The Mustangs get a first-round bye in the opening round of the Class 2A postseason. They will play either Davis County or Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the District 11 semifinals at Pella Christian on Thursday.

Gilbert boys 77, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter boys 63

BAXTER — Gilbert used a 7-of-14 from performance from 3-point range to build a big halftime lead. Then the Tigers held off a CMB rally with three more triples in the second half and claimed a share of the Heart of Iowa Conference title with PCM following the win.

"We think our strength is to play in that zone," CMB coach Scott Brummel said. "We rotated well enough, but give them credit, they knocked them down. It evened out a little bit in the second half but that first half was big."

Bryce Kemp had 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Raiders, who dropped to 10-11 on the season. Tommy Galloway also had 15 points, Brady Stover scored 12 and Seth Balke chipped in nine points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.

The Tigers led 20-17 after a wild first quarter but pushed the lead 47-35 at halftime thanks to five 3-pointers in the second quarter.

CMB trimmed the Gilbert lead to five midway through the third quarter and then failed to get closer on four straight possessions before the Tigers pulled away.

"We shot it too quick on every one of those possessions," Brummel said. "It was a really quick four possessions. We didn't have a lot of possessions and we didn't get the ball where it needed to go. And it was just a lot of quick shots."

Jack Hoiberg scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half for Gilbert. Ryan Blum also had 18 points. They combined to hit seven treys. Wes Greder finished with 16 points.

CMB connected on just 5-of-23 from long range, while Gilbert was 10-of-27.

The Raiders also get a first-round bye in the 2A playoffs. They will play either South Hardin or East Marshall in the District 12 semifinals at Des Moines Christian on Thursday.

Nevada boys 81, Colfax-Mingo boys 56

COLFAX — The Tigerhawks held a halftime lead for the third straight game but once again failed to seal the deal.

Trailing 34-31 at halftime, Nevada outscored Colfax-Mingo 50-22 in the final two quarters and won easily.

Cole Gidel led the charge with 29 points and all four of his 3-pointers were made in the second half. The Cubs buried 12 treys in the game.

Colin Lourens finished with 18 points and eight rebounds for Colfax-Mingo, which dropped to 0-21 on the year.

Blake Summy and Jacob Lietz each had 10 points and Jacob Nichols scored nine. Lietz also had five boards and four assists, but the Tigerhawks turned it over 19 times.

Nevada also got 16 points and four 3-pointers from Zach Hanson and 14 points from A.J. Strottman.

Colfax-Mingo begins Class 1A postseason play on Monday. The Tigerhawks will travel to Liberty Center to face Southeast Warren at 7 p.m.
