CMB girls fall short against Norsemen

STORY CITY — A strong third quarter got the Raiders back in the game after a slow start, but CMB ran out of gas in the fourth quarter in losing 47-46 on the road to Roland-Story on Friday night.

The Norsemen (10-9, 9-8) led 17-11 after one and 30-22 at halftime, but CMB rallied with an 11-2 advantage in the third. The Raiders shot 18-of-45 from the floor though and lost despite making treys.

Brianda Bane had 17 points and nine rebounds, while Lexi Breon had 18 points and four assists. Bane and Breon combined to hit all eight of CMB’s 3-pointers. Mikayla Eslinger had eight boards and Mackenzie Schmitz also dished out six assists.

The Norsemen swept the season series from CMB but won both games by a combined three points. Roland-Story won 60-58 in double overtime in Baxter earlier this season.

CMB is now 4-16 overall and 4-13 in HOIAC play. Eight of the 16 defeats have come by three points or less.

Taylor Olson led the Norsemen with 12 points while Jenna Clark scored 11.

STORY CITY — The Norsemen hit 10 3-pointers and avenged an overtime loss earlier this season.

The hosts got out to a 17-7 lead after one and never trailed again, outscoring the Raiders (8-10, 7-9) 15-8 in the third.

Bryce Kemp and Joey Nissen each had 14 points to lead the Raiders. Nissen buried four treys and Kemp also had 10 boards. Seth Balke had eight points, six steals, four rebounds and four assists and Patrick Girard added seven points and nine boards.

The Norsemen (12-6, 10-6) were 22-of-46 from the floor and 10-of-22 from long range. Colin Greene drained seven 3-poiners and finished with 21 points, while Jerald Fritz added 17 points and 10 boards. Tyler Hovick also had 12 points to help Roland-Story win its third in a row.

CMB returns home to face Saydel in a doubleheader at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Baxter.
