Cardinal bowlers roll past Norwalk

NORWALK — It was a clean sweep for Newton High’s bowling teams Saturday. Both Cardinal varsities and junior varsities won in their final dual of the regular season.

The Cardinal girls’ varsity rolled a 2,589 pin total, winning by 507 pins over host Norwalk, which had a 2,082 total score. Newton led 1,769-1,425 after the individual games then posted a Baker games total of 820.

It was the highest total score for the Newton girls this season. They were led by junior Madison Humphrey’s 429 series. Humphrey threw back-to-back 200 games (216-213). Senior Erica Bailey opened up with a 205 and finished with a 375 series.

Lizzy Coyle, a sophomore, bowled a 354 with games of 159 and 195. Senior Melanie Stice had a 311 (163-148) and junior Mariah Gonzales had a 300 (141-159). Freshman Alyssa White threw a 243 (131-112).

The girls’ Baker game scores were 186-159-143-158-174.

Following the individual games, the Cardinal varsity boys were on a pace for a 2,700 pin total. They got close, winning 2,627-2,403. A couple of low Baker game scores got them off pace.

Newton went into the Baker games up 1,816-1,559 over Norwalk. The Cardinals opened Baker games rolling a 198 and a 173 then dropped a 112. They improved on the next game with a 176 and finished with a 152 for an 811 total.

Junior Shea Carre posted the high series of the day for Newton’s boys with a 415, rolling a 212 and a 203. Senior Payton Cox threw a 369 with games of 205 and 164, while sophomore Nick VerSteeg recorded a 203 game on his way to a 358 series.

Junior Bryan McMahon had a 341 (186-155) and senior Alex Bare had a 333 (155-178). Reid Miller, a sophomore, bowled a 327 (142-185).

Newton’s junior varsity girls’ and boys’ teams each won their last meet of the season. Both teams won by more than 300 pins. The girls shot a 1,880 and the boys shot a 2,175.

“I would like to mention all the junior varsity bowlers and thank them for coming out and bowling this season and hope to see you all out for bowling next year,” said Brett Jacobs, Newton head bowling coach.

Junior varsity girls were Kirsten Young, Kaytie Hughes, Ali Cox, Kayla Sopher, Hayley Sinclair, and Kayla Botterbrodt. Junior varsity boys were Reece Thurmond, Sam Supino, Austin Johansen, Joe Malsom, Michael Hodnett, Zion Dickey, Tayler Hernandez, and Treyton Ham.

Against Norwalk, Young led the junior varsity girls with a 340 followed by Cox with 262, Hayley Sinclair with 250, Sopher with a 223 and Botterbrodt with a 222.

Thurmond paced the junior varsity boys with a 350 followed by Supino with a 330, Johansen with a 284, Hodnett with a 257 and Ham with a 187.

Newton’s varsities prepare for Friday’s Little Hawkeye Conference meet at Oskaloosa. Action begins at 4 p.m.
