Cardinal bowling teams sweep Indians

OSKALOOSA — Newton High’s bowling teams had a clean sweep of their Little Hawkeye Conference dual with host Oskaloosa Saturday.

Newton’s girls overcame a 27-pin deficit after the individual games. Oskaloosa was up 1,497-1,470 going into the Baker games.

The Cardinal girls pulled together to roll a total score of 802 in the Baker games to the Indians’ 739. Newton posted a 2,272-2,236 win.

Madison Humphrey led the way with a 340 series on games of 166 and 174. Erica Bailey (162-142) and Mariah Gonzales (162-141) followed with 304 and 303, respectively.

Alyssa White had a 273 (115-148). Sophomore Lizzy Coyle filled in for senior Melanie Stice on the varsity. Coyle rolled a 250 series (124-126) in her varsity debut. Courtney Tabor finished at 247 (123-124).

Newton’s girls had scores of 147-188-163-155-141 in the Baker games.

The Cardinal boys posted their highest Baker game outing of the season with a 966, which was a 193 average. Newton held a large lead, 1,736-1,383, over Oskaloosa after the individual games.

With the Baker games score, Newton’s boys defeated the Indians, 2,702-2,098. Newton’s Baker game scores were 194, 180, 215, 177, 200.

Alex Bare rolled a 362 series on games of 201 and 181 to pace the Cardinal boys. Shea Carre had a 356 (178-178) and Reid Miller threw a 343 (160-183).

Payton Cox finished with a 338 (213-125) and Nick VerSteeg had a 337 (156-181). Shaiden Simmons bowled a 321 (179-142).

Newton’s junior varsity were unopposed on Saturday. The girls had a total of 1,737 with a Baker game score total of 544. The boys finished at 2,115 with a 702 Baker game score.

Newton boys’ junior varsity individual scores were: Sam Supino, 328; Austin Johansen, 311, Joe Malsom, 276; Tayler Hernandez, 259; Michael Hodnett, 239.

Newton girls’ junior varsity individual scores were: Ali Cox, 268; Hayley Sinclair, 259; Kayla Sopher, 243; Kirsten Young, 198.

Newton’s teams compete at Norwalk Saturday.
