Hawk girls clinch SICL title; boys roll

VICTOR — Lynnville-Sully’s basketball teams quickly set the tone of their road doubleheader in South Iowa Cedar League play Friday against host HLV. The Hawks team swept the conference games.

Lynnville-Sully’s Class 1A sixth-ranked girls wrapped up the 2014-2015 South Iowa Cedar League title with a runaway win over HLV, 61-27. The Hawk girls improved to 18-0 overall and 17-0 in SICL play.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys dominated the Warriors to the tune of a 70-22 decision. The Hawks ripped the nylon cords for 15 3-pointers in the contest. Lynnville-Sully improved to 10-5 overall and 9-5 in SICL.

It didn’t take much time to establish control of the game against the HLV Warriors. Lynnville-Sully rolled to a 24-4 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Hawks extended their 34-13 halftime lead with a 19-9 run in the third period.

“We started pretty good in the first quarter of getting out and pressuring the ball, but in the second quarter we had a little let down,” said Jerry Hulsing, Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach. “Then in the second half we did a good with our defensive pressure, which led to some easy baskets. It was good to have balance scoring again.”

Lynnville-Sully had four players score in double figures led by Kasiah Ehresman with 17 points. Madison Rasmusson tossed in 12 points and made seven of the team’s 19 steals.

Marisa Vos had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lysandra James scored 10 points. Brenna Lanser made six steals.

Lanser also scored seven points. Camryn Russell added three points and Jelissa Rozendaal had two points.

The Lynnville-Sully girls shot 49 percent, 24-of-49, from the field, hitting seven 3-pointers. They had a 40-18 edge in rebounding.

Corrie Craig paced the Warriors with nine points. The HLV girls shot 27.5 percent, 11-of-40, from the field.

Speaking of hot shooting, the Hawk boys torched the nets from long range, hitting 15-of-37 3-pointers, for 40.5 percent. They were 24-of-58 overall from the field for 341 percent and went 7-of-8 at the free-throw line.

“The guys came out and shot the ball well tonight,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully head coach. “We took care of the basketball and got good looks at the rim. Our defense was pretty solid again, and we were able to double them up on the boards.”

Lynnville-Sully was up 35-8 at halftime. The Hawk boys used a 28-10 run in the third quarter to extend they commanding lead.

Canyon Kuhlmann connected for four threes on his way to a game-high 12 points. He also dished out seven assists. Sage Ehresman finished with 11 points for the Hawks. Tyler Van Zante and Ben Trettin each fired in three 3-pointers for nine points apiece.

Kyle Van Dyke grabbed 11 of the team’s 40 rebounds and scored four points. John Trettin tossed in eight points and Jesse Van Wyk had seven points. Baker Zegers scored four points. Caleb James had three points and two steals. Ryan Hofer scored two points.

The Warriors only shot 22 percent, 10-of-45, from the field. Tanner Strudthoff scored 11 points for HLV.

Lynnville-Sully’s teams play at Sigourney Tuesday.

Lynnville-Sully’s junior varsity girls (13-2) defeated HLV, 34-20, Friday night. They were led by McKinley Conover with eight points, Russell with seven and Makenzy Rozendaal with six. On Monday, Lynnville-Sully’s junior varsity girls outlasted Colo-NESCO, 35-32. Jelissa Rozendaal scored 11 points and Conover had 10 points for the Hawks.
