Newton Police Department

• Dennis C. Cooper, 60, of Newton, is charged with driving while license denied or revoked after he was pulled over in the 900 block of East Fifth Street South at 1:08 a.m. Tuesday. Officers pulled him over for a third brake light not functioning. He currently has a temporary license but did not have an ignition interlock or a 431009 form that is required of him. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Terry G. See, 56, of Newton, is charged with consumption/intoxication in public places after authorities were called to Sombrero Restaurant at 6:58 p.m. Tuesday. Officers were called on an unruly customer throwing food. They found See on the floor with two men around him to keep him contained. His pants were wet and he said that he consumed a pitcher of alcohol at the restaurant. He got angry because he thought he was not getting service and witnesses alleged he knocked food and drinks off of the table. He was uneasy on his feet and had a BAC of .038. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Cole H. Veverka, 20, of Newton, is charged with second-degree criminal mischief after authorities were called to Hy-Vee at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 22. Officers spoke with the victim who alleged Veverka kicked her car in the gas station parking lot. Officers saw a shoe print and a dent in the car. Veverka admitted to kicking the car. Damages were estimated at $1,237.77. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Sherri S. Smith, 46, of Newton, is charged with driving while license denied, possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after authorities pulled her over in the 400 block of East Fifth Street North at 6:06 p.m. Jan. 19. Officers pulled over the vehicle because they believed it was stolen. Smith was unable to produce a driver’s license. The vehicle was confirmed stolen and towed to Barney’s. Smith requested her purse and when asked if there was anything illegal in it she said there may be some meth. Officers found a small bag with a crystal-like substance consistent with meth along with a pipe and another small bag with white residue. While being transferred, she said there was another pipe in her bra. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Churie M. Congdon, 27, was arrested on a warrant for fifth-degree theft after authorities were called to 800 S. Second Ave. W. at 5:32 p.m. Saturday. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Travis W. Howerton, 30, of Newton, was arrested on a warrant for two forgery charges after authorities recognized him in the 1400 block of East 19th Street North at 1:04 p.m. Sunday. Howerton exited the vehicle he was in and ran. Officers pursued and apprehended him. Howerton was wanted for using a credit card not in his name 13 times. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Lorrie L. Cupp, 49, of Newton, is charged with simple misdemeanor assault after authorities were called to 308 E. Eighth St. N. at 7 p.m. Monday. Officers spoke with the victim who alleged when he went to the door where he was staying, Cupp met him, and they discussed some missing money. Cupp believed the victim or one of his associates had taken. They began to fight and Cupp told the victim to leave. Cupp allegedly pushed him in the chest and grabbed him and attempted to choke him but he pulled away. Cupp then allegedly elbowed the victim in the jaw. After the victim got in a vehicle, Cupp allegedly punched the window. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
