Newton junior varsity wrestlers compete

GREENFIELD — Newton High’s junior varsity wrestlers competed in Monday’s Pride of Iowa Junior Varsity tournament hosted by Nodaway Valley High School.

The Cardinals finished fourth with 69 points. Van Meter won the team title with 104 points.

It was an all-Newton final in the 113-pound division. Jonathon Lawton defeated teammate Aren Sorensen 10-2 for first place. Lawton and Sorensen had each pinned Nathan Stone of Pleasantville and Lance Thompson of Interstate 35.

Noah Hammer placed second at 152 pounds for Newton.

Hammer went 3-1 with a major decision of 12-4 over Dustin Linn of Pleasantville and he pinned Burke Suckow of Van Meter and Cole Dickenson of Interstate 35. His loss was by a fall to Noah Hale of Van Meter.

Harley Walker went 3-1 at 160 for second place and Newton teammate Blayden Rhone finished fifth, going 0-4. Walker pinned Spencer Calkins of Southwest Valley, Gabe Fell of Coon Rapids-Bayard and won by injury default over Rhone.

Walker was pinned by Colton Golwitzer of Van Meter.

Golwitzer pinned Rhone in round one. Rhone lost by a fall to Calkins of Southwest Valley in round two. Rhone lost his last two matches by injury default.

At 138 pounds, Parker Schuster went 1-2 for third place. Schuster pinned Daylan Dalton of Southwest Valley in round two. He was pinned by Adam Walker of Central Decatur and Interstate 35’s Jacob Stienlage.

Taking third at 285 for Newton was Caleb Kite, who lost 1-0 to Carter Cook of Pleasantville and was pinned by Clayton Heck of Coon Rapids-Bayard.

Reed Shepard placed fourth at 170 pounds. Shepard was pinned by Evan Mann of Pleasantville, Derek Golwitzer of Van Meter and Merik Gaule of Southwest Valley.
